Scholarships are available for educators, students and residents of the Gunnison Valley.

Travel to the Gunnison Valley

The Gunnison Valley is rural and beautiful, but it is also a resort and recreational hub with a full-service commercial airport only a mile from Western's campus. This summer the airport offers daily jet service from Denver and Houston.

That's the good news.

The challenge is that flights are frequently expensive. As a result, we encourage you to book travel early.

Another option for travelers: we will be running shuttle vans from Denver, Grand Junction and Montrose, which have larger airports and significantly lower fares. Denver is about a four-hour drive one-way; Grand Junction is about three hours; Montrose (on the way to Grand Junction) is about one hour. We encourage you to shop around. Please remember that the welcome reception begins at 5:30 on Wednesday. We will be running shuttles from all airports that arrive in time for that event, along with shuttles that depart later in the day. Again, please book early.

All information about shuttle rides, including times and fares, is on the registration page.

Three and four-day lodging options on Western's attractive campus are available through the registration site, along with links to off-campus options.

All on-campus accommodations are in the Pinnacles Residence Hall apartments. Click here for a campus map. All apartments are suites with two to four bedrooms. Bedrooms are singles, and there is one bathroom for every two bedrooms. Furnishings for suites include a double bed in each bedroom with a set of sheets, one blanket, one bath towel, one hand towel and one washcloth; a dresser, night stand, sofa, end table, and dining table with chairs. Toiletries and shampoo are not provided. Suites do have kitchenettes but Western does not provide pans, utensils, dishes or cleaning supplies.

Off-campus lodging is also available. For a full set of links to off-campus lodging options, click here.

Gunnison is a quaint mountain town at an elevation of 7700 ft. It is sunny and warm during the day but can cool off quickly once the sun goes down, even in July. Don't forget sunblock, a hat and a light coat or fleece. Recreational opportunities in the surrounding mountains are extraordinary but remember to bring sturdy shoes and other appropriate gear if you plan any excursions.

You can learn more about the valley, including off-campus lodging, here.
