Scholarships associated with academic programs usually have a specific scholarship application form that can easily be obtained by contacting that academic program's office or visiting that academic program's web page. AAUW Zelda Rouillard Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility:

Nontraditional students (at least 25 years of age). Must be a full-time with a minimum of 30 credit hours, currently attending Western and working on first B.A. degree.

Amount:

Four $600 scholarships awarded, two each semester.

Alber, Mary L. Memorial Scholarship

Available to:

Must be a full-time student, successfully completed a minimum of 60 credits, be an Art major seeking an education certificate. Must demonstrate both a strong interest in art education and the potential to become a successful teacher in art. Must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or greater.

Alumni Association Future Alumni Scholarship

Alumni Association Future Alumni Scholarship

The Alumni Association Scholarship is a one-time scholarship of $1,000 and is applicable for the student’s junior or senior year at Western.

Any child or grandchild enrolled at Western is eligible to receive the Future Alumni Scholarship.

  • This is a one-time non-renewable scholarship of $1,000.
  • Only one Future Alumni Scholarship will be awarded per academic year.
  • GPA must be 3.2 or above (college).

Applicants must fill out the application form and submit the required documents by April 1.  An Alumni selection committee, appointed by the Alumni Advisory Board, will review applicants and select and awardee by June 1.

Alumni Legacy Scholarship

Alumni Legacy Scholarship

The Alumni Legacy Scholarship is a one-time non-renewable scholarship and is only applicable for the student’s first year at Western (incoming freshman or new transfer students are eligible).

Do you have a son or daughter looking at college? Have they considered attending Western? As an alumni, your son, daughter and/or grandchildren are eligible for certain benefits distributed through this scholarship, as follows:

  • This is a one-time scholarship of $1,000.
  • Nominee must be an incoming freshman or new transfer.
  • The cost of orientation is reduced by half (a $45 value).
  • The admission application fee is waived (a $30 value).
  • GPA must be 3.0 or above (high school or college of transfer).

The applicant must fill out the application form found here (click).  Application forms are accepted year-round.  If the applicant meets the GPA guidelines, the scholarship will be awarded.

Barr, Robert M. and Roberta Armstrong Scholarship

Available to:

Must be a Colorado Resident, a Western student enrolled at  in at least 12 credits, exhibit and document a solid history of exemplary citizenship gaged by involvement in the community, through civic engagement, service learning projects, etc. Prove commitment to teaching and academic excellence, while continuing to hold the aforementioned values throughout the term of the scholarship. Certify financial need.

Mrs. Roberta Barr established this scholarship to help potential teachers gain the education they need to be successful. Mrs. Barr was an educator, over several decades, and understood the importance of well-trained, dedicated teachers. Borah, Tracy Memorial Wrestling Scholarship

Available to:

Student may come from any state/country, must be a very promising and accomplished wrestler, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5, must have completed his freshman year and could be a red-shirted freshman. Not necessarily considered for only financial needs.

Established by Louie Carleo and other friends and former wrestlers of Tracy Borah to provide scholarship assistance to talented Western Colorado University student-wrestlers. This scholarship serves to celebrate the memory of Tracy Borah by supporting the kind of Intercollegiate Athlete he cared most about.

Boundless Opportunity Scholarship

Eligibility:

The Boundless Opportunity Scholarship honors and supports nontraditional students who recognize the power an education has to create a better life for themselves and their families. It is intended for adults entering or returning to college, foster care or juvenile justice youth, GED recipients or returning military. Recipients must demonstrate financial need and be highly-motivated students seeking the next level of achievement in their lives, regardless of their life path.

Bus Riders Football Scholarship

Criteria: 

Student must maintain good standing as a participant of the Western Football team who is eligible to compete per NCAA and RMAC regulations.

Provided by:

Established by members of the 1950 Football team to honor the team members who survived a bus ride over Monarch Pass when the brakes on their bus failed. The harrowing events made national news and created a lifelong bond between this group of young men.

Calkins-Barge Mathematics Scholarship

About

The Calkins-Barge Mathematics Scholarship has been established by Glenn R. and Leila M. (Barge) Calkins to provide scholarship assistance to Western students majoring in mathematics. This scholarship serves to honor Western Graduates: Hazel, Glenn's mother (Elementary Education - 1932); Glenn (Mathematics and Physics -1962); Shane (Mathematics - 2016), Glenn and Leila's son. This Scholarship also honors Glenn and Leila, who taught in the Mathematics & Computer Science Department at Western. Glenn taught from 1978-2000, and Leila from 1986-2009. Finally, we honor William Calkins, Glenn's father who attended and was employed at Western, and Jesse and Mary Barge, Leila's parents, who fell in love with Western and the Gunnison Valley.

Eligibility

Applicants for the Calkins-Barge Mathematics Scholarship:

  • Must be a Mathematics major entering junior or senior year and having satisfactorily completed Mathematics 220, Introduction to Advanced Mathematics.
  • Must have a GPA of 2.670 or higher.
  • Preference will be given to a current student-athlete (NCAA sport) or a first responder.
  • If a student-athlete (NCAA sport), preference will be given to members of the Wrestling Team.
  • If a first responder, applicant must be an active member with a Gunnison Valley Service Provider and preference will be given to members of the Gunnison Volunteer Fire Department.
  • Recipients may reapply unless they fail to maintain eligibility.

Application Procedures

Individuals interested in being considered for this scholarship must contact the Mathematics & Computer Science Department and the Financial Aid Office for scholarship application information. The deadline for applying shall be April 1 to be considered for the following academic year. The Mathematics faculty and Financial Aid staff will assemble those applications which meet the stated criteria. Recipients will be selected by Glenn and Leila Calkins, in consultation with the Director of Financial Aid.

Champion Leadership & Responsibility Scholarship

Available to:

Intercollegiate Athletes that are a junior or senior in Intercollegiate Athletics eligibility standing in their respective sport program(s). Be at least 21 years of age by the first day of classes in the academic year in which they receive the scholarship. Recipient must be enrolled at Western and in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA, and be a member of a Western Colorado University Intercollegiate Athletics team. They must be eligible to compete under NCAA and RMAC rules and regulations, and clear a back-ground check conducted by the Office of Student Affairs.

  • Continued Expectations: Throughout the year that an applicant receives and represents this scholarship, they are expected to continue to live to the ideals of the scholarship program. Charlesworth, William Memorial Scholarship

Available to:

The applicant has applied to and has been accepted for admission to Western and is pursuing a major in Mathematics or related Natural Sciences. The applicant has demonstrated a need for financial assistance. The applicant has demonstrated an interest and is active in inter-collegiate athletics. Preference should be given to entering freshmen; however, all classes, freshmen through senior, are eligible. Preference should be given to applicants whose study time is limited by family obligations or the need to earn income. No preference should be given based on the sex of the applicant. Preference should be given to applicants from Delta County, Colo. or the Western Slope of Colorado.

Eligibility:

Gunnison High School graduate majoring in Business, Chemistry or History at Western Colorado University. Students must be prepared to demonstrate financial need, a positive attitude and academic ability.

Damson, F. George Music Award

Available to:

Winner of the Damson Music Performance Competition. Contestants perform for 20 minutes (5 min. memorized) on Damson recital. Must be Music majors who are enrolled in at least 12 credit-hours at Western.

Mountaineer Alumni Recommendation Scholarship

Mountaineer Alumni Recommendation Scholarship

The Mountaineer Alumni Recommendation Scholarship is a one-time non-renewable scholarship and is only applicable for the student’s first year at Western. This scholarship is not available to midyear transfers or students beginning in the spring semester.

Are you an Alumni or Employee of Western and know a prospective (or incoming) student who would be a great fit at Western?  A recommendation from Alumni and Employees can support any new student and provide them a $500 scholarship their first year. (Western employees may not recommend a spouse or dependent receiving tuition benefits).

  • Any Western Alumni/Employee may nominate only one student per academic year to receive the $500 scholarship (distributed $250 per semester).
  • The scholarship is good for the first year only and is non-renewable.
  • The recommended student must be a full-time undergraduate student, attending Western for the first time.

The Brian Hirsh Award

The Brian Hirsh Award is Available to:

The small award is for a graduating senior, to give them a start in their career, perhaps to start a website, to cover a fee or an art show or art supplies; however, there are no strings attached.

Must be a graduating Art major with skills in sculpturing, preferably in hand built ceramics.

The Brian Hirsh Award has been established by Joel and Barbara Hirsh to provide an award to a Western Colorado University Senior majoring in Art. This scholarship serves to honor the art talent of Brian Hirsh, a 2001 graduate of Western who passed away in 2012.

The Foundation Scholars Program

The Western Colorado University Foundation is a nonprofit corporation established to provide private support to Western students. The funds for The Foundation Scholars Program are donated to the Foundation by Western alumni, friends and parents.

The Awards

$4000 to a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior Western student (one scholarship per class). Students can be resident or non-resident students.

The Scholarship is renewable for non-seniors:

  • Must maintain a 3.5 grade point average;
  • Must contribute their leadership abilities as a student;
  • Must submit a brief letter outlining these accomplishments;
  • Must maintain status as a full-time student.
Criteria

Eligible candidates should have a high school, transfer, or Western Colorado University grade point average of 3.5 (minimum). For high school applicants, an accompanying score of 25 or higher is required on the ACT or a score of 1100 on the SAT.  Candidates must also demonstrate leadership qualities or experience.

  1. Send a cover letter and resume citing your qualifications and accomplishments.
  2. Make sure to include your Western student identification number in your application.
  3. At least two letters of recommendation.
  4. Official copy of your most recent educational transcript.  Incoming Freshmen, this is a HIGHLY competitive scholarship, please note if your school does not provide advanced courses (AP, Honors, IB, dual credit, etc.)
  5. Document ACT or SAT scores if not listed on transcript.
  6. Any other documentation that would be helpful in evaluating you as a candidate for this Scholarship.

The Presidential Honors Scholarship

The Western Presidential Honors Scholarships, established by the Jack and Marilyn MacAllister Foundation shall be an elite class of scholarships awarded to Western's highest achieving and most deserving students, celebrating the ideals of academic excellence and service to the campus and community. Recipients of the Scholarships will be members of the Western Colorado University Honors Program.

There are eight Presidential Honors Scholarships of $2500 each. Each year two new Presidential Honors Scholarships will be awarded to two incoming freshmen. 

The Western Presidential Honors Scholarship

Each year two new Presidential Honors Scholarships of $2500 will be awarded to two incoming freshmen. In addition, all continuing Honors students may apply for Presidential Honors Scholarships. The following information provides due dates, criteria, and how to prepare your application. 

Incoming Applicants:

Eligible candidates should have a high school, transfer, or Western Colorado University grade point average of, at minimum, 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Candidates must also demonstrate leadership qualities or experience and a commitment to intellectual inquiry and academic challenge.

Incoming candidates should submit the following:

  • A cover letter explaining why you want to be a part of Western's Honors Program and what you think the value is in being a part of the Honors Program;
  • Two sealed letters of recommendation from teachers, guidance counselors, professors or academic advisors which address the student’s accomplishments and suitability for a college Honors Program;
  • A copy of your most recent educational transcript;
  • A resume of your qualifications, accomplishments, service, extra-curricular activities;
  • Any other documentation that would be helpful in evaluating you as a candidate for this Scholarship.

Continuing Applicants (current Western Honors students):

Note that continuing Honors students do not need to have been awarded a previous Presidential Honors Scholarship to apply. 

Continuing candidates should compile and submit the following in one packet, hard copy:

  • A copy of the student's most current Western transcript (minimum 3.5 GPA required);
  • A letter addressed to the Western Colorado University Foundation Scholarship Program Committee containing the following:

a) the student's plan for completing the Honors Program;
b) evidence of Honors leadership abilities through planning and participating in Honors extracurricular activities;

  • One sealed letter of recommendation from a professor or academic advisor which addresses the student's accomplishments and suitability for a Presidential Honors Scholarship.​

Applications for continuing Honors students are DUE BY MARCH 12 of the year of application and should be submitted in hard copy to the Honors Program Director, Taylor Hall 110A. It is the applicant's responsibility to verify that the hard-copy application has been received.

The Wilbourn Family Scholarship

Eligibility:

Full-time students with junior and senior status who have displayed acts of peace in the Gunnison Valley, be it environmental, social or otherwise.

Please complete and submit Western's Common Scholarships Application. Applicants must include a personal statement (1,000 word maximum) and two letters of recommendation. The personal statement should include background about applicant's interests and motivations at Western. Include examples of specific projects, events and experiences with progressive social activity in the Gunnison Valley and explain how these brought peace to the community. Describe your long-term goals and concerns surrounding your future as an active citizen and explain how this scholarship will help you continue to be a peaceful person in the future. The letters of recommendation can be from university faculty, advisors, activists, organizational leaders, politicians or others who are familiar with your recent activities.

Thornton Assistance Scholarship

Western Presidential Scholars Award For Valedictorians

Eligibility:

The Western Presidential Scholars Award is a full-tuition scholarship available to Valedictorians of Colorado high schools. The scholarship is renewable for four years or eight consecutive semesters and will cover full in-state tuition charges after the COF stipend is applied. The Western Presidential Scholars Award would replace any other merit scholarship that may have already been awarded.

The Western Presidential Scholars Award is a competitive scholarship as there are a limited number of awards available each year. Minimum Criteria: 3.80 cumulative High School GPA, 25 ACT score/1200 SAT combined score, be ranked #1 on high school transcript or certified as valedictorian by high school official.

To apply students must submit a letter of application, one letter of recommendation, and provide verification of Valedictorian status to the Financial Aid Office. Completed applications must be received by April 1, of each year.

Wilderness Based Orientation Scholarship

The mission of Wilderness Based Orientation (WBO) is to enhance student success while transitioning into college.  We do this by engaging students in the intensive social, physical, and educational atmosphere of a structured wilderness expedition.  During these expeditions, WBO aims to develop the strength and quality of character necessary for collegiate success.  These qualities include tenacity, honesty, craftsmanship, compassion, intrinsic motivation, and leadership.  Through WBO, we attempt to shape the culture of the freshman class by exposing students to the values held by Western Colorado University.  These values include learning, critical thinking, knowledge, education, leadership, fun, service to others, community, citizenry, environmental stewardship, and healthy lifestyles.

Wright, Paul W. Memorial Fund

Available to:

Western/RMAC scholar Intercollegiate Athletics. Must have competed at Western Colorado University for two or more years and have at least one year of eligibility remaining.

Provided by:

Paul W. Wright and his wife Hazel who made immeasurable contributions to students of Western. During his 28 years on the staff (1935-1963), "Frosty" Wright coached every men's sport at one time or another and served as Intercollegiate Athletics director and chairman of the Physical Education Department. He was named to the Helms Intercollegiate Athletics Foundation Hall of Fame in 1970 in partial recognition of his role in establishing skiing as an intercollegiate sport recognized by the NCAA. The gymnasium on the Western Campus is named in his honor.
