Program-based Scholarships

Scholarships associated with academic programs usually have a specific scholarship application form that can easily be obtained by contacting that academic program's office or visiting that academic program's web page.  AAUW Zelda Rouillard Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Non-traditional students(at least 25 years of age). Must be a full-time student, with a minimum of 30 credit hours, currently attending Western and working on first B.A. degree.

Provided by: Gunnison Branch of AAUW

Amount: Four $600 scholarships awarded, two each semester.

Application: Provide a letter giving biographical information, educational goals and specific financial benefit from receiving the award. Include names and telephone numbers of two Western Colorado University faculty references. Please complete and submit Western's Common Scholarships Application located here.

 Alber, Mary L. Memorial Scholarship

The Alber, Mary L. Memorial Scholarship is Available to:

Must be a full-time student, successfully completed a minimum of 60 credits, be an art major seeking an education certificate. Must demonstrate both a strong interest in art education and the potential to become a successful teacher in art. Must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or greater.

Art Scholarship Provided by:

A gift from Ethel Rice and Owen Sharp originating from the estate of Mary Alber.

Amount: Award depends on funds available.

 Alumni Association Scholarship

  • $1000 Alumni Association Scholarship.
  • Junior or Senior standing required.
  • Minimum G.P.A. of 3.2.

Applications are available in the Office of Alumni Relations located in Taylor Hall Room L2B or apply here.

*All application materials are due on April 1.

 Alumni Association Scholarship

Any child or grandchild enrolled at Western is eligible to receive the Future Alumni Scholarship. This is a one-time scholarship of $1,000. Only one Future Alumni Scholarship will be awarded per academic school year. Applicants must provide fill out the application form and submit required documents by April 1. An Alumni selection committee will review applicants and select an awardee by June 1.

Legacy Scholarship is a one year non renewable scholarship and is only applicable for the students first year at Western.

Barr, Robert M. and Roberta Armstrong Scholarship is Available to:

Must be a Colorado Resident, a Western student enrolled at  in at least 12 credits, exhibit and document a solid history of exemplary citizenship gaged by involvement in the community, through civic engagement, service learning projects, etc. Prove commitment to teaching and academic excellence, while continuing to hold the aforementioned values throughout the term of the scholarship. Certify financial need.

Education Scholarship Provided by:

Mrs. Roberta Barr established this scholarship to help potential teachers gain the education they need to be successful. Mrs. Barr was an educator, over several decades, and understood the importance of well-trained, dedicated teachers. As an alumnus of Western, she was committed to providing scholarships to students who have demonstrated capability, promise, community involvement, and financial need.

Full-time students with a declared or a plan to declare an Education major. Must have a 2.75 GPA and maintain it, in order for continued eligibility. Recipients will be expected to volunteer their time with the Western Foundation, to help with special projects, fundraising events, etc., as a learning experience to advance their practical education.

 Borah, Tracy Memorial Wrestling Scholarship

Wrestling Scholarship Available to:

Student may come from any state/country, must be a very promising and accomplished wrestler, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5, must have completed his freshman year and could be a red-shirted freshman. Not necessarily considered for only financial needs. Provided by: Established by Louie Carleo and other friends and former wrestlers of Tracy Borah to provide scholarship assistance to talented Western Colorado University student-wrestlers. This scholarship serves to celebrate the memory of Tracy Borah by supporting the kind of Intercollegiate Athlete he cared most about.

Scholarship Amount:

The scholarship shall be for $2,000.

Scholarship Selection Committee:

The Western Head Wrestling Coach, Louie Carleo, and a member of the Borah Family (Candi Borah).

Application:

Due by May 1, must be submitted to the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Need a letter or recommendation from one of the following: a teammate, previous wrestling coach, assistant Western wrestling coach (NOT Western's head wrestling coach), friend, teacher, or anyone who is on the selection committee.  Boundless Opportunity Scholarship

Eligibility: The Boundless Opportunity Scholarship honors and supports non-traditional students who recognize the power an education has to create a better life for themselves and their families. It is intended for adults entering or returning to college, foster care or juvenile justice youth, GED recipients or returning military. Recipients must demonstrate financial need and be highly-motivated students seeking the next level of achievement in their lives, regardless of their life path.

Brennecke/Elkins, Magdalene Scholarship is Available to:

Junior standing or above at the end of the term in which he/she applies; must plan to teach at either elementary or secondary level; must be fully admitted to the School of Education; must have a 3.0 GPA in education and overall; must have demonstrated personal characteristics which would predict success as a teacher. Financial need will be considered.

Bus Riders Football Scholarship is Available to:

Student must maintain good standing as a participant of the Western Football team who is eligible to compete per NCAA and RMAC regulations.

Football Scholarship Provided by:

Established by members of the 1950 Football team to honor the team members who survived a bus ride over Monarch Pass when the brakes on their bus failed. The harrowing events made national news and created a lifelong bond between this group of young men.

 Calkins-Barge Mathematics Scholarship

The Calkins-Barge Mathematics Scholarship has been established by Glenn R. and Leila M. (Barge) Calkins to provide scholarship assistance to Western Colorado University students majoring in mathematics. This scholarship serves to honor Western Graduates: Hazel, Glenn's mother (Elementary Education - 1932); Glenn (Mathematics and Physics -1962); Shane (Mathematics - 2016), Glenn and Leila's son. This Scholarship also honors Glenn and Leila, who taught in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department at Western. Glenn taught from 1978-2000, and Leila from 1986-2009. Finally, we honor William Calkins, Glenn's father who attended and was employed at Western, and Jesse and Mary Barge, Leila's parents, who fell in love with Western and the Gunnison Valley.

Eligibility

Applicants for the Calkins-Barge Mathematics Scholarship:

  • Must be a Mathematics major entering Junior or Senior year and having satisfactorily completed Mathematics 220, Introduction to Advanced Mathematics.
  • Must have a GPA of 2.670 or higher.
  • Preference will be given to a current student-athlete (NCAA sport) or a first responder.
  • If a student-athlete (NCAA sport), preference will be given to members of the Wrestling Team.
  • If a first responder, applicant must be an active member with a Gunnison Valley Service Provider and preference will be given to members of the Gunnison Volunteer Fire Department.
  • Recipients may reapply unless they fail to maintain eligibility.
Application Procedures

Individuals interested in being considered for this Scholarship must contact the Department of Mathematics and Student Financial Services for scholarship application information. The deadline for applying shall be April 1 to be considered for the following academic year. The Mathematics faculty and Student Financial Services will assemble those application which meet the stated criteria. Recipients will be selected by Glenn and Leila Calkins, in consultation with the Director of Student financial Services.

Intercollegiate Athletes that are a junior or senior in Intercollegiate Athletics eligibility standing in their respective sport program(s). Be at least 21 years of age by the first day of classes in the academic year in which they receive the scholarship. Recipient must be enrolled at Western and in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA, and be a member of a Western Colorado University Intercollegiate Athletics team. They must be eligible to compete under NCAA and RMAC rules and regulations, and clear a back-ground check conducted by the Office of Student Affairs.

Continued Expectations:Throughout the year that an applicant receives and represents this scholarship, they are expected to continue to live to the ideals of the scholarship program. Colorado Resident and US citizen. Declared Foreign language major preferred or a minor with strong interest in studies of other cultures. Awards will be awarded to incoming Freshman who demonstrates a strong interest in and an aptitude for foreign languages. Balance of awards given to students who obtained at least Sophomore standing. Applicants for the Charles J. Gerhardt Memorial Scholarship must be full time, junior or senior level students majoring in either Art or English and must be maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25. The award will alternate every year between an Art and English major.

A bequest in Miss Redding's estate and from gifts from former students, colleagues, and friends. Edwyl Redding was one of Western's most loved music professors. She joined the faculty in 1918 and for the next 42 years she played a significant role in the development of the University. Professor and administrator, Ms. Redding's legacy to Western include two musical compositions, "Alma Mater - Western Colorado University of Colorado" and "Ode To Western," the official hymn of the University.

Rouse, Roberta M. Scholarship is Available to:

Colorado residents. Must be a full-time student in good academic standing; must be planning a career in elementary education; demonstrated academic performance and financial need. Preference is given to students returning to college to continue their education.

Elementary Education Scholarship Provided by:

Her children to honor their mother. Roberta Rouse met her husband, Fred, while they were attending Western Colorado University. Following World War II, they returned to Western where Roberta supported her husband as he completed his education and began his career as an educator. After the birth of their last of nine children, Roberta returned to complete her B.A. and M.A. degrees in elementary education. Seven of their children also attended Western Colorado University and five of the children became school teachers.

Provided by: A bequest by Reva Sapp O'Connor, daughter of the early-day Gunnison attorney and Colorado State Senator who played a prominent part in promoting the establishment in 1901 of the Colorado State Normal School, which was to become Western as we know it today.

 The Brian Hirsh Award

The Brian Hirsh Award is Available to:

The small award is for a graduating senior, to give him/her a start in his/her career, perhaps to start a web site, a fee or an art show or art supplies; however, there are no strings attached.  Must be a graduating Art major with skills in sculpturing, preferably in hand built ceramics. 

Art Award Provided by:

The Brian Hirsh Award has been established by Joel and Barbara Hirsh to provide an award to a Western Colorado University Senior majoring in Art. This scholarship serves to honor the art talent of Brian Hirsh, a 2001 graduate of Western who passed away in 2012.

 The Foundation Scholars Program

The Western Colorado University Foundation is a non-profit corporation established to provide private support to Western students. The funds for The Foundation Scholars Program are donated to the Foundation by Western alumni, friends and parents.


The Awards

Provide $4,000 to a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior Western student (one scholarship per class).  Students can be resident or non-resident students.

The Scholarship is renewable for non-seniors:

  • Must maintain a 3.5 grade point average;
  • Must contribute their leadership abilities as a student;
  • Must submit a brief letter outlining these accomplishments;
  • Must maintain status as a full-time student.

Criteria

Eligible candidates should have a high school, transfer, or Western Colorado University grade point average of 3.5 (minimum). For high school applicants, an accompanying score of 25 or higher is required on the ACT or a score of 1100 on the SAT.  Candidates must also demonstrate leadership qualities or experience.


Application Process

1. Send a cover letter and resume citing your qualifications and accomplishments.
2. Make sure to include your Western student identification number in your application.
3. At least two letters of recommendation.
4. Official copy of your most recent educational transcript.  Incoming Freshmen, this is a HIGHLY competitive scholarship, please note if your school does not provide advanced courses (AP, Honors, IB, dual credit, etc.)
5. Document ACT or SAT scores if not listed on transcript.
6. Any other documentation that would be helpful in evaluating you as a candidate for this Scholarship.

Incoming Applicants:

Eligible candidates should have a high school, transfer, or Western Colorado University grade point average of, at minimum, 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.   Candidates must also demonstrate leadership qualities or experience and a commitment to intellectual inquiry and academic challenge.

Incoming candidates should submit the following:

  • A cover letter explaining why you want to be a part of Western's Honors Program and what you think the value is in being a part of the Honors Program;
  • Two sealed letters of recommendation from teachers, guidance counselors, professors or academic advisors which address the student’s accomplishments and suitability for a college Honors Program;
  • A copy of your most recent educational transcript;
  • A resume of your qualifications, accomplishments, service, extra-curricular activities;
  • Any other documentation that would be helpful in evaluating you as a candidate for this Scholarship.

Continuing Applicants (current Western Honors students):

Note that continuing Honors students do not need to have been awarded a previous Presidential Honors Scholarship to apply. 

Continuing candidates should compile and submit the following in one packet, hard copy:

  • A copy of the student's most current Western transcript (minimum 3.5 GPA required);
  • A letter addressed to the Western Colorado University Foundation Scholarship Program Committee containing the following:

a) the student's plan for completing the Honors Program;
b) evidence of Honors leadership abilities through planning and participating in Honors extracurricular activities;

  • One sealed letter of recommendation from a professor or academic advisor which addresses the student's accomplishments and suitability for a Presidential Honors Scholarship.​

Applications for continuing Honors students are DUE BY MARCH 12 of the year of application and should be submitted in hard copy to the Honors Program Director, Taylor Hall 110A. It is the applicant's responsibility to verify that the hard-copy application has been received.

 The Wilbourn Family Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students with Junior and Senior status who have displayed acts of peace in the Gunnison Valley, be it environmental, social or otherwise.

Application: Please complete and submit Western's Common Scholarships Application located here. Applicants must include a personal statement (1,000 word maximum) and two letters of recommendation. The personal statement should include background about applicant's interests and motivations at Western. Include examples of specific projects, events and experiences with progressive social activity in the Gunnison Valley and explain how these brought peace to the community. Describe your long-term goals and concerns surrounding your future as an active citizen and explain how this scholarship will help you continue to be a peaceful person in the future. The letters of recommendation can be from university faculty, advisors, activists, organizational leaders, politicians or others who are familiar with your recent activities.

 Thornton Assistance Scholarship

Eligibility: Any student that has a unique or unforeseen situation or considerable financial need.

 Western Presidential Scholars Award For Valedictorians

Eligibility: The Western Presidential Scholars Award is a full tuition scholarship available to Valedictorians of Colorado high schools. The scholarship is renewable for four years or eight consecutive semesters and will cover full in-state tuition charges after the COF stipend is applied. The Western Presidential Scholars Award would replace any other merit scholarship that may have already been awarded. The Western Presidential Scholars Award is a competitive scholarship as there are a limited number of awards available each year.  Wright, Paul W. Memorial Fund

Wright, Paul W. Memorial Scholarship is Available to:

Western/RMAC scholar Intercollegiate Athletics. Must have competed at Western Colorado University for two or more years and have at least one year of eligibility remaining.

Athletic Scholarship Provided by:

Paul W. Wright and his wife Hazel who made immeasurable contributions to students of Western. During his 28 years on the staff (1935-1963), "Frosty" Wright coached every men's sport at one time or another and served as Intercollegiate Athletics director and chairman of the Physical Education Department. He was named to the Helms Intercollegiate Athletics Foundation Hall of Fame in 1970 in partial recognition of his role in establishing skiing as an intercollegiate sport recognized by the NCAA. The gymnasium on the Western Campus is named in his honor.

Must exhibit high standards of scholarship, leadership and citizenship and above average communicative skills.

Elementary Education Award Provided by:

Ann Zugelder, one of Gunnison's most distinguished citizens. She was an elementary school teacher for more than 30 years, maintaining her interest and support of elementary education after her retirement in 1967.
