Practice Schedules and Limitations

Western Athletics’ Practice Schedules

An intercollegiate athletics program is an institutional commitment; the success of which depends on the actions of everyone at Western.  Below is a list of current practice schedules, please feel free to use this as a guide in helping us minimize conflicts between a student-athlete’s academic and athletic priorities.

The times listed are the start times and approximate end times for each sport.  Adjustments may be made for the sports involving facilities that must be shared (Volleyball, Men’s Basketball, and Women’s Basketball) in which case the teams will rotate their schedules but the times will remain the same and only rotate on a semester basis.  Much of the changes in the rotation is for gender equity reasons and to comply with NCAA Rules and Federal Law, specifically Title IX.

Generally the times are the same year to year; coaches keep the times as consistent as possible.  The coaches are flexible when scheduling: film, classroom, pool, weight lifting, training, and other conditioning times.  Other than competition and travel, if something needs to be scheduled outside of the times listed below, the coach does so around the student-athletes’ classes.  Morning practices are finished with enough time for the student-athletes with an 8:00 am class to shower and attend class.  There is very limited or no practice during finals weeks per NCAA rules.

If a student-athlete has class during a practice or a study session, while we want to be proactive and avoid these conflicts where possible, the student-athlete is to be attending class.

Again, these times are when practice starts. Similar to required homework and readings needing to be completed prior to class, a student athlete may have other things he/she needs to do outside these practice times in order to be prepared for practice.

This schedule is only for when school is in session and does not include winter break, summer, fall camps, or other breaks and vacation days.

Anything that concerns missing classes for competitions and/or team travel, please note that the RMAC and the NCAA set the travel schedule or have a set minimum number of competitions required throughout the year.  This is mandatory in order to have a particular athletic squad or remain members of both the RMAC and the NCAA.

Should anyone have any questions or concerns please address them to me, Dillon Waggoner, Assistant Athletic Director – Internal Operations and Compliance. My email is dwaggoner@western.edu and ext. 3020.
