Distributed generation systems often must be grid-tied to achieve full economic value and ensure reliability of the system. Understanding the challenges and processes of this interconnection scheme (application, permitting, standards, rates, and inspections) for both the customer and the electric utility are an under-served area of research. Such installations are growing at rapid rates, NREL reports a total of 577,000 distributed generation solar systems nationwide, 49,000 of those being installed in Q3 of 2014. This assessment can serve utilities as well as its customers.
