Do you love Western and want to help welcome the next generation of Mountaineers to our campus? Consider becoming an Orientation Leader! OLs play a vital role in facilitating the adjustment of new students to Western and the Gunnison community. As an OL, you will gain valuable teamwork, public speaking, and leadership skills by assisting new freshmen and transfer students with their transition to Western. OLs are also compensated with a stipend, provided discounted summer housing, and receive extra special perks along the way. Being an OL is a memorable experience that will help build you as an individual and a  professional.

Applications for Orientation Leaders are
due on Feb. 21 by 5 pm.
  • Hiring decisions will be announced on March 5 or soon after.
  • This is a competitive position and it is in your best interest to pay close attention to application instructions, punctuation & grammar and answer questions completely.
  • Resumes are required; applications will not be considered complete without one. Training Schedule

2018 Orientation Training Schedule:
All of the trainings/programming listed below are required for Orientation Leaders.

  • Tuesday evenings: Beginning March 6- April 24, 7–8:30 pm
  • Orientation Leader Retreat: March 31-April 1 (exceptions will be made for academics & athletics)
  • Summer Training: Must be available approximately August 12
  • NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION: Wednesday, August 22 – Sunday, August 26
  • CBMR University Day: Sunday, August 26

Minimum Qualifications


  • Good academic (minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA) and student conduct standing, maintained throughout spring/summer 2018.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills which include: ability to provide leadership to fellow staff, ability to speak to large groups and and strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to take initiative with staff duties and projects.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively and positively in a team environment.
  • Possess a positive attitude throughout the New Student Orientation program.
  • Possess a strong desire to represent Western State Colorado University and be a role model for Orientation leaders and program participants.
  • Be available for approximately 10 hours of training in March and April 2018. (This does not include the Orientation Leader Retreat.)
  • Available to work for the entire New Student Orientation and training.
  • Please note: Students graduating in spring 2018 may be considered for the position, however Orientation strives to fill the team with students who will be attending Western for fall term 2018.

Roles & Responsibilities


  1. Acquaint new students and their parents/family members with the community, structure, campus, policies & resources at Western State Colorado University.
  2. Orientation leaders will serve as a guide, mentor and role model to new students, family members, and fellow leaders.
  3. Assist new students with the transition to campus life and encourage involvement in the Western community.
  4. If selected to be a Western Orientation Leader, you agree to adhere to all Western State Colorado University policies and exemplify the core values of our institution.

COMPENSATION: Orientation Leaders receive approximately $1000 for the season, as well as meals, travel for retreats & lots of Western schwag!
