The Western State Wind Symphony will be performing on Thursday, February 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the John and Georgie Kincaid Concert Hall. The event marks the 65th Annual Firemen’s Host night concert. The public is invited to attend and admission is by donation benefitting the Gunnison Volunteer Firefighters.
On Thursday evening, the Wind Symphony will be performing a wonderful transcription of Danzon No. 2, by Arturo Marquez. This composition of Mexican Heritage includes shades of Mariachi trumpets, Dance music, and Love songs.
The Wind Symphony will continue the program with an encore performance of Carl Orff’s Masterwork, “Carmina Burana.” This spectacular musical work takes the audience on a musical journey based on texts from the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth centuries.
The texts cover a wide and varied range of subject matter from the sacred to the secular, the capricious nature of fortune, the brevity of life, the beauty of springtime, and the earthly pleasures and temptations of eating, drinking, gluttony, and lust. Likewise, the music runs the gamut of these emotions, resplendent with color and imagination, and unique in substance and impact.
