Western to host local history event at Crested Butte museum

GUNNISON, Colo. – On Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m., Western State Colorado University will host at the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum four speakers set to discuss San Juan Valley mining towns.

Professor Duane Vandenbusche, Ph.D., will kick off the evening with a slide show on the history of the mining towns. Emeritus Professor Bruce Bartleson, Ph.D., will join him to discuss the geology of the region.

In the second half of the evening, CLCD Productions’ Cathy Carpenter Dea will join the group. Cathy will discuss her film team’s amazing experiences shooting footage of Vandenbusche and Bartleson during the San Juan Mining Tour for an upcoming documentary entitled “Breaking the Mold, Colorado Contemporaries.”

The documentary is the pilot for a series premiering at Western on April 28, 2018, and on Rocky Mountain PBS later in the year.

Carpenter Dea’s husband, Peter Dea, will also join to share many interesting tales from yesteryear’s classes and his recent experiences from the San Juan Mining Tour.

The evening will conclude with a short trailer for the documentary.
