On Tuesday, June 16, President Salsbury announced his executive decision to close campus on Friday, June 19 in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. The message he sent to faculty, staff and students is as follows:

Good Morning All,

As you may know, June 19 known as “Juneteenth” is the oldest informal celebration of the abolition of slavery in our country. Even though President Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865 that slavery was considered to have been abolished nationwide. In honor of this date I would like to announce that I am declaring Juneteenth, Friday, June 19, 2020, an official Western President’s Holiday.  Campus will be closed this Friday for Juneteenth observance.  Leave reports for June 19 should be marked “holiday."

Thank you everyone.

President Salsbury
