Fans who went to the Mountaineers' home opening football game on Sept. 16 may have noticed Western's new feature to enhance the game day experience: the MountainBEER Zone made its debut as Western battled Chadron State.

“The beer garden was an initiative that a lot of universities have been starting to do in the last few years. [We want fans] to have a great game day atmosphere but more of a controlled atmosphere as well,” said Miles Van Hee, Western’s athletic director.

The beverages offered at the MountainBeer Zone included: Coors, Coors Light, Budweiser, Bud Light, Blue Moon, Stella Artois and an assortment of wine.

“We will also have a craft beer featured at each game,” said Katie Benoit, Western’s associate athletic director. “At the first game [versus Chadron State] we featured Eddyline, and for homecoming we will feature Irwin Brewing out of Crested Butte.”

Fans who are 21+ now have a place to hang out with friends, sip suds and enjoy a game at the highest collegiate football field in the world.

“As long as everything goes smoothly, we will keep offering the beer garden,” Van Hee said.
