 AAUW Zelda Rouillard Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Non-traditional students(at least 25 years of age). Must be a full-time student, with a minimum of 30 credit hours, currently attending Western and working on first B.A. degree.

Provided by: Gunnison Branch of AAUW

Amount: Four $600 scholarships awarded, two each semester.

Application: Provide a letter giving biographical information, educational goals and specific financial benefit from receiving the award. Include names and telephone numbers of two Western Colorado University faculty references. Please complete and submit Western's Common Scholarships Application located here.

 Alumni Association Scholarship

  • $1000 Alumni Association Scholarship.
  • Junior or Senior standing required.
  • Minimum G.P.A. of 3.2.

Applications are available in the Office of Alumni Relations located in Taylor Hall Room L2B or apply here.

 Alumni Scholarship

Eligibility: Student must be Junior or Senior standing and have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.2.

Amount: One $1,000 scholarship

Application: The form is available in the Alumni Relations Office located in the Aspinall-Wilson Center. All application materials are due on April 1.

 Antholz, Leona E. Scholarship

Eligibility: Residents of Montrose, Delta or Ouray counties in the State of Colorado with a minimum of 30 credit hours.

Amount: Maximum award of $1,500 per student recipient

 Boettcher Opportunity Award

Eligibility: Full-time under-represented students at Western. Students must be Colorado residents and are sophomore, junior or senior standing at Western with a 3.0 GPA in previous academic work.

Amount: Five $3,000 scholarships

 Boundless Opportunity Scholarship

Eligibility: The Boundless Opportunity Scholarship honors and supports non-traditional students who recognize the power an education has to create a better life for themselves and their families. It is intended for adults entering or returning to college, foster care or juvenile justice youth, GED recipients or returning military. Recipients must demonstrate financial need and be highly-motivated students seeking the next level of achievement in their lives, regardless of their life path.

Application: The application is available in the Financial Aid Office and can be turned into the Financial Aid Office in Taylor Hall 314. Currently there is no deadline for the 2018-19 or 2019-20 aid years.

 Caplan, Gerald Scholarship

Eligibility: Graduates of small public Colorado high schools (with a three-year graduating class size of 100 graduates or less). Preference given to minority students with financial need. Preference given to students who are the first in their families to attend college.

 Carr, Martha A. Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Needy students from the Western Slope of Colorado. Must qualify for federal or state aid, or demonstrate a financial hardship and have sophomore standing. Must exemplify the purpose of the Westerners In Transition Program.

 Coleman, Paul Jr. and Mirta M. Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Colorado residents who are Gunnison High School graduates. Must be full-time Western student that maintained a 3.2 GPA or greater as a GHS graduate, or a 3.0 GPA as a Western student.

Amount: Award depends on funds available.

Application: Complete and submit The Paul Jr. and Mirta M. Coleman Scholarship application which is available in the Office of Financial Aid, Taylor Hall 314. A teacher recommendation form and a one page essay will be needed to complete the application.

 Coleman, Paul Jr. Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Colorado residents who are Gunnison High School graduates. Must be full-time Western student and have maintained a 3.2 GPA or greater as a GHS graduate, or a 3.0 GPA as a Western student.

 Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative (COSI)

Eligibility: Aspiring Western students who graduated from a Colorado high school and whose family income is up to 250% of that which would qualify them for a Federal Pell Grant.

Amount: Scholarship levels vary and are based on available funds

Application: After applying to Western and completing your FAFSA, you will need to send an email to Dr. Abel Chavez at achavez@western.edu with the subject line "Yourlastname_yourfirstname_COSI" containing:

  • A two-page essay describing why you want the scholarship and what effect it will have on your life. Consider including information about recent projects, extracurricular activities, and other accomplishments.
  • One letter of recommendation from teacher, coach, mentor, or supervisor.

 Cotner, Doug and Charlotte Scholarship

Eligibility: Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Must be in the upper Ω of their high school graduating class for first year students. Must meet or exceed a GPA of 2.0 for returning or transfer students.

 Crismon, LT. F. Scot Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: A full-time student, carrying at least 15 semester hours. Must have earned a 3.5 GPA in a minimum of 30 semester hours at Western; must have demonstrated leadership abilities.

Provided by: Family to perpetuate the memory of Western alumnus Lt. F. Scot Crismon, Navy fighter pilot who served aboard the attack carrier USS Hancock during the Vietnam conflict.

Amount: Award depends on funds available.

 Cummins, D.H. and Mildred Scholarship Fund

Eligibility: Gunnison High School graduate majoring in business, chemistry or history at Western Colorado University. Students must be prepared to demonstrate financial need, a positive attitude and academic ability.

Provided by: D.H. Cummins, Ph.D., Professor of History and Dean of Academic Affairs at Western, in memory of his wife, Mildred, who taught in the Gunnison Public Schools. In addition, contributions to the scholarship have been made by family and friends in memory of both D.H. and Mildred Cummins.

 Dirksen, Evan James Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students who participate in the Mountain Sports Program (preferably Big Mountain Skiing) and who are majoring in Geology or Music. Preference given to Gunnison High School graduates (Gunnison valley graduates) who demonstrate financial need.

 Dorricott, Herbert J. Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time, Colorado residents who have obtained at least junior status (60+ credit hours). Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. May be renewable for a second year if received by a junior.

Provided by: Donations from family and friends of Mr. Dorricott who served Western in many capacities including: student, Asst. Professor, Registrar, Business Manager, Asst. to the President, and VP for Business Affairs.

 Eastman Award In Recreation and Outdoor Education

Eligibility: The Eastman New Student Award is open to both new freshmen and new transfer students. Students must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and freshmen must also have a 21 ACT or 990 SAT. Students must also show a documented commitment to recreation as their major field of study at Western. Must show outstanding achievement in at least three of the following five areas:

  • Special Recreational Talents
  • Unique Recreational Endeavors
  • Obstacles Overcome
  • Community Service
  • Leadership

 First Bank Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility: Colorado residents whose main principal residence is in Colorado Springs to Fort Collins, Aurora to Evergreen; Vail, Avon, Breckenridge, Silverthorne and/or Greeley. Must be a full-time student with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.

 Glover, Whitney Chantal Scholarship

Eligibility: Incoming freshmen from Gunnison High School who plan to major in Biology, Chemistry, Education and/or Exercise and Sport Science at Western. Students should have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0, but 2.5 will be considered if there are special circumstances. Preference given to females and to those interested in working with children during high school and intend to pursue a career working directly with children.

 Gunnison VFW Auxiliary #4267 Veterans Scholarship

Eligibility: Must be a full-time student who is a veteran of the U.S. armed forces and is a resident of Gunnison, CO. If no veterans apply, family members of veterans are eligible.

 Gunnison Watershed Scholarships

Eligibility: Gunnison High School graduates who attain a high level of academic achievement and who have exhibited strong leadership traits through student government, athletics and other activities. Recipient must maintain a 2.5 GPA at Western during first session in order to qualify for second payment.

 Hunter, Frances Memorial Presidential Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students from Western Slope of Colorado who have both academic promise and financial need.

 Kastellic, Joseph A. Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students who are majoring in Environmental Studies, Environmental Biology or a related field. Must be junior level (60 credits) or above and have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. Preference given to students with financial need who are residents of the Western Slope of Colorado and have expressed interest in a career in park operations/park management or a career in the earth sciences.

Provided by: Barbara Kastellic and gifts from others to honor Joseph, who was the first Superintendent of the Black Canyon National Monument from 1975-1984.

 Kenny, Brenda Gail Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time Western students with a minimum GPA of 3.00. Have both academic promise and be in need of financial assistance. Preference will be given to applicants who are members of the Costello or Kenny families.

 Kent, LT. General Glenn A. Scholarship

Eligibility: Residents of Otero County, Colorado who have a minimum 2.75 GPA and who demonstrate financial need. Recipients may renew each year with a 2.75 GPA.

 Kjosness, Olaf C Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time Western students with a minimum 3.2 GPA. Must be able to demonstrate leadership abilities and high personal character.

Provided by: Olaf Kjosness, Ph.D., former Dean of Students, who filled the position of "father figure" and mentor to hundreds of Western students, personally subsidizing students from his own finances. The scholarship he established when he retired and a memorial fund established by family and friends have been combined to honor and perpetuate his memory.

 Leroux Family Trust Scholarship

Eligibility: Colorado residents with a 3.0 GPA who show financial need. Preference given to graduates of West Grand High School (Kremmling, CO) followed by graduates of other Western Colorado high schools.

 Luftseben-TKD Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students with Junior and Senior status. Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. Students must demonstrate leadership qualities which predict future success in service to his/her college community or country. A student may exhibit these qualities by participating as an officer of the student body or a Western club or as a captain of a sports team.

 Mohab Foundation Scholarship

Eligibility: Colorado residents who have been accepted for admission with a class status of sophomore or above. Must be a full-time student and maintain a 2.75 GPA; demonstrate and verify financial need.

Provided by: The Mohab Foundation, which is a group of former Western students who have continued their friendship after leaving Western in the late 1970's and '80's.

 Moncrief Petroleum Geology Scholarship, Transfer Students

Moncrief Petroleum Geology Scholarship for Transfer Students is Available to:

Students transferring to Western Colorado University, with an interest in working in the petroleum industry with a declared major in Geology. Completion of at least 45 credit hours, GPA of 3.25 or higher and an ACT composite of 25 or greater. Renewable for up to two years with continuing progress made toward a degree in Comprehensive or Petroleum Geology, full time status and a cumulative 3.0 GPA overall.

Available to: Full-time, Colorado residents who have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. Must be able to demonstrate a contribution or promotion of diversity on Western's campus. Additionally, students must remain active with the Multicultural Center for the entire year.

 Musgrave, Frank A. Memorial Scholarship

 O'Leary, Margaret White Scholarship

Eligibility: Students who have earned 45 credit hours at Western Colorado University with a cumulative GPA of 3.5.

Provided by: Mrs. O'Leary, Mrs. Hattie Steel and women's clubs in Gunnison and Western Colorado. The fund had its beginnings in 1912 when the College was a Normal School to educate teachers.

Amount: Two $600 scholarships.

 Orahood, Ernest - Otero Junior College/Western Scholarship

Eligibility: Otero Jr. College graduates transferring to Western. Must be a full-time student and have financial need, with a minimum of 30 credit hours. Math or Science majors with a 3.0 or higher preferred but not required.

Provided by: Ernest Orahood who attended Western from 1936-1940, on very limited resources. This scholarship is made in appreciation of his experiences at Western and to help other needy students.

Eligibility: Colorado residents. Must be a full-time student and have financial need. GPA of 3.0 or higher required for renewal.

 Phelps, Ethel Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Female graduates of Gunnison High School who are enrolled full-time at Western. Must demonstrate both academic promise and financial need and maintain academic eligibility with a GPA of 2.0 or greater.

 Piquette, Charles E. and Lucille C. Scholarship

Eligibility: Descendants of Western Alumni, must work part-time, embody the spirit and values of Charles and Lucille Piquette. They encouraged all of their children to receive higher education (especially through Western) and created a family legacy at Western. Preference given to Colorado residents.

 Porter, Ralph E Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Residents of Colorado's Western Slope. Must be accepted as a full-time student at Western Colorado University and a cumulative 2.5 GPA.

 Queal, Morgan L. Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students with demonstrated financial need who embody the spirit and values of Morgan L. Queal. Queal served as an attorney for the Navajo Nation and later entered private practice. Per Calvin Queal, "Morgan had a special feeling for the poor, the disadvantaged, the persecuted and abused. She scorned sham and pretension, and firmly believed in the causes of justice and fairness." Preference given to students studying a Liberal Arts field such as history, political science, literature, writing or art.

Eligibility: Gunnison High School or Crested Butte graduates who are full-time, high need and demonstrate a strong desire to continue his/her education and succeed professionally. Recipient must maintain a 2.5 GPA at Western during first session in order to qualify for renewing scholarship.

 San Juan Mining Scholarship

Eligibility: Incoming freshmen who are graduates of Gunnison High School (current Western students are NOT eligible). Students must enroll full-time at Western Colorado University. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be able to show financial need.

 Sapp, Dexter T. Scholarship Fund

Eligibility: Must have resided in Gunnison County for at least 12 consecutive months. Applicant must be of good sound moral character. Financial need will be considered.

Provided by: A bequest by Reva Sapp O'Connor, daughter of the early-day Gunnison attorney and Colorado State Senator who played a prominent part in promoting the establishment in 1901 of the Colorado State Normal School, which was to become Western as we know it today.

Eligibility: Colorado residents of the Western Slope. Must be a full-time student and have financial need.

 Sodexo Campus Services Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time student with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA with at least 30 credit hours at Western Colorado University and with evidence of successful participation in co-curricular aspects of college and community life. Preference may be given to students who have successfully met the additional demands of a job while attending college and who are not receiving other college aid. To receive the scholarship after the first term, the recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA.

 Speck, Travis J. Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Residents of the Western Slope who are full-time students enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours. Applicants must have a minimum of 30 credit hours at Western with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher. Applicants must also demonstrate financial need.

Amount: The annual amount shall be $500.

 Speck, Travis Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Residents of the Western Slope who are full time students enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours. Applicants must have a minimum of 30 credit hours at Western with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher. Applicants must also demonstrate financial need.

Eligibility: Colorado residents who exemplify the philosophy of the Westerners In Transition program with demonstrated financial need who have obtained at least junior status and a 2.0 GPA.

 T.W.C. Foundation Scholarship

Eligibility: Must be a Colorado resident. Must be a full-time student and have financial need. GPA of 3.0 or higher required for renewal. All things being equal, preference will be given to Business School students.

 The Foundation Scholars Program

The Western Colorado University Foundation, a non-profit corporation established to provide private support of Western Colorado University, announces The Foundation Scholars Program. The funds for this program are donated to the Foundation by Western alumni, friends, and parents.

 The Presidential Honors Scholarship

The Western Presidential Honors Scholarships, established by the Jack and Marilyn MacAllister Foundation shall be an elite class of scholarships awarded to Western's highest achieving and most deserving students, celebrating the ideals of academic excellence and service to the campus and community. Recipients of the Scholarships will be members of the Western Colorado University Honors Program.

There are eight Presidential Honors Scholarships of $2500 each. Each year two new Presidential Honors Scholarships will be awarded to two incoming freshmen. Click here for criteria and application.

 The Wilbourn Family Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students with Junior and Senior status who have displayed acts of peace in the Gunnison Valley, be it environmental, social or otherwise.

Amount: $1,000 as funds are available

Application: Please complete and submit Western's Common Scholarships Application located here. Applicants must include a personal statement (1,000 word maximum) and two letters of recommendation. The personal statement should include background about applicant's interests and motivations at Western. Include examples of specific projects, events and experiences with progressive social activity in the Gunnison Valley and explain how these brought peace to the community. Describe your long-term goals and concerns surrounding your future as an active citizen and explain how this scholarship will help you continue to be a peaceful person in the future. The letters of recommendation can be from university faculty, advisors, activists, organizational leaders, politicians or others who are familiar with your recent activities.

 Thornton Assistance Scholarship

Eligibility: Any student that has a unique or unforeseen situation or considerable financial need.

Provided by: The estate of Jessie Thornton

Amount: Award depends on funds available.

Narrative should include a detailed description of their unique or unforeseen situation or considerable financial need. Students should also submit supporting documentation to provide an accurate picture of their financial situation.

 Webster, Helen Mae Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Juniors who have demonstrated high scholarship, character and participation in school activities.

 Western Presidential Scholars Award For Valedictorians

Eligibility: The Western Presidential Scholars Award is a full tuition scholarship available to Valedictorians of Colorado high schools. The scholarship is renewable for four years or eight consecutive semesters and will cover full in-state tuition charges after the COF stipend is applied. The Western Presidential Scholars Award would replace any other merit scholarship that may have already been awarded. The Western Presidential Scholars Award is a competitive scholarship as there are a limited number of awards available each year. Minimum Criteria: 3.80 cumulative High School GPA, 25 ACT score/1200 SAT combined score, be ranked #1 on high school transcript or certified as valedictorian by high school official.

Application: To apply students must submit a letter of application, one letter of recommendation, and provide verification of Valedictorian status to the Financial Aid Office. Completed applications must be received by April 1, of each year.
