Building on Western’s larger institutional commitment, SGS believes in inviting and providing rigorous, rich and transformational graduate opportunities for all.

We encourage students from all sectors to contact us with their questions about SGS. We would be honored to host you as you explore your next professional move with the seriousness you and your decision deserve. We also look forward to your contributions in making SGS and Western a campus of inclusive excellence!

Points of Emphasis

In our collective efforts of cultivating a campus of inclusive excellence, we:

  • Focus on student intellectual and social development, offering the best possible course of study for each of our students.

  • Aim to create an environment that challenges each student to achieve at his or her highest level.

  • Actively pay attention to the cultural differences learners bring to the educational experience.

  • Work tirelessly to create a welcoming community that engages all of its diversity in the service of student and learning.

Resources and Recognition

For example, SGS has developed the following programmatic thrusts to help achieve the above:

  • The Dean’s Award for Inclusive Excellence publicly recognizes and honors program-wide or faculty-level tangible efforts toward promoting a campus of inclusive excellence.

  • Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Internationalization in and out of the classroom are highly valued on campus. SGS supports both students and faculty on various related needs—from research and career opportunities for students to cutting-edge pedagogical practices for instructors.

  • Career and professional development of our students is one of our highest priorities. The suite of regular seminar topics may include diversity in the workplace, building an inclusive team and designing an inclusive résumé.
