Counseling Center

We are located in the Campus Counseling Center at 104 Crystal Hall. Full-time students, faculty and staff can receive behavioral-health counseling sessions. The Counseling Services provide information and support to Western students, faculty and staff about any issue, including, but not limited to, adjustment, relationships, grief or loss, anxiety, depression, urgent consultation, and crisis intervention.

Walk in hours:

The counseling center now has open access hours. This means you can walk-in, same day for your first appointment and initial evaluation with a therapist. Initial appointments typically take 1.5 hours, so plan accordingly. If you need an initial appointment outside of these hours, please call. Otherwise, simply walk-in.

Monday and Wednesday 8:45 - 11:00 a.m. and 12:45 - 3:00 p.m.
Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:45 - 3:00 p.m.
Friday 8:45 - 11:00 a.m.

How it Works:

  • Details vary from person-to-person & specific circumstances
  • The Center for Mental Health staff will discuss payment options
  • Please speak with a counselor if there are concerns about payment
  • Everyone has access to care
  • All Insurance is accepted in addition to Western counseling benefit


Emergency and after hours phone number is 970.252.6220.  Please tell the answering service that you are from Western, in Gunnison and need to speak with the Community Mental Health Emergency Professional on-call. Give them your phone number and name, and they should call you back within 15 minutes. Stay by the phone. If you have not heard back from them in 15 minutes, call again. You may also call 911 or go directly to the Gunnison Valley Hospital at 711 N. Taylor Street. (There may be charges for the hospital and lab)
