About the ARC

Mission Statement: The mission of the Academic Resource Center at Western Colorado University is to strengthen intellectual maturity and personal growth through academic support services. We support Western Colorado University in helping students develop skills needed for lifelong learning and encourage students to take an active role in the learning process as well as develop grit and self-efficacy needed for success in college and beyond.

Vision Statement: The Academic Resource Center at Western Colorado University is committed to becoming a model center for academic support in higher education, to promote academic preparedness, transition and progress towards degree completion. The Academic Resource Center collaborates with others, internally and externally, to ensure the success of students at Western through success advising, exploring potential programs of study, academic support for people with disabilities and encouraging students to learn about world cultures through student exchanges and study abroad programs.

Katie Wheaton, Director/Academic Advisor

Katie joined the Western community in 2011 as the Academic Success Advisor. She has most recently served as an academic advisor and international specialist. She holds a B.A. in International Studies with an emphasis in Latin America and Spanish Language from the University of Missouri. As an undergraduate she had the pleasure of studying abroad in Monteverde, Costa Rica and Sevilla, Spain. After her undergraduate education, she moved to Summit County and worked at Colorado Mountain College (CMC) as an administrative assistant and an ESL instructor. Upon leaving CMC, Katie traveled to Central America for four months and taught ESL in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. When she returned to the states, she relocated to Fort Collins to pursue and complete a M.A. in Adult Education, Workforce Training and Human Resources Studies from Colorado State University.

Alyssa Atzenbeck, Academic Success Advisor/ Exploratory Program Coordinator

Alyssa holds a B.A. in Business Administration with emphases in Management and Entrepreneurship from Western. She has been a part of the ARC team since 2017 and transitioned to the Success Advisor. She can help struggling students and students on academic probation with time management, study skills, test taking strategies, etc. She coordinates the Exploratory Program for advising undeclared students.

Cheyenne Terry, Disability Services Coordinator/ Academic Advisor

Cheyenne relocated to Gunnison from Danville, Arkansas. She holds a B.A. in English and a M.S. in College Student Personnel with an emphasis in Disability Services from Arkansas Tech University. She is our campus ADA/504 Coordinator and works with faculty and staff to meet the needs of students with disabilities. She also runs the testing center.

Kris Gayer, Study Away Coordinator/ Academic Advisor

Kris transitioned to the ARC from being the Savage Library Night Manager. Kris is a Western alum with a B.A. in History and holds an M.A. from Montana State University. He participated in NSE as an undergrad and is excited to grow our study away opportunities on campus. He supervises the Peer Academic Leaders (PALs) and advises undeclared students in the Exploratory Program. He is also responsible for providing support services for international students.
