Frequently Asked Questions:

Who is Wilderness Based Orientation intended for?

Everyone! WBO is designed to serve as an orientation for all new Western students, whether they are freshmen or transfer students, as long as they have been admitted to Western for fall semester. It's not just for folks who know their way around the outdoors! On the contrary, WBO is for any student who is interested in having an awesome experience. No prior experience is required for the courses, all you need is to be physically and mentally prepared for the challenge. Please see the Medical Form and Liability Waiver for more information.

Do I still need to attend a New Student Orienation Session?

Yes. The WBO courses are offered as supplemental programs to New Student Orientation, not as a substitute.

What do I need to bring?

You will need to provide your own clothing and basic outdoor gear, including a backpack and sleeping bag appropriate to the adventure. All the rest of the gear will be provided including all the technical equipment needed for your trip. Please see individual gear lists for each course. Click here and select your Wilderness Based Orientation course to see what you need for .

How hard is it?

Each WBO expedition is different. The amount of skill and physically difficulty of each particular expedition is explained in its description. If you have any questions at all regarding skills and difficulty level please call Jake Jones at (970) 943-7051.

What is the fee used for?

The fee is used to cover the direct costs of the expedition such as transportation, food, gear, permits, and staff stipend. The fee does not cover the cost of overhead such as the Director's salary, or facilities. The program fees are different from one expedition to the next because the direct costs vary between programs. There is only a $150 deposit due when you make your Orientation Reservation, the remainder will be charged at a later date.

Are scholarships available?

Yes! Western State College is proud to include Scholarship opportunities to students desiring to attend a WBO course for the first time this year. The scholarship application will be available in April 2007. View more scholarship information here.

What is your safety record?

Our program has an excellent safety record. We have never had a serious incident. The staff of WBO hold current Wilderness First Responder Medical Certifications. The program is administered by a full time professional with 14 years experience in the field and is fully backed by Western State College.

Are courses open to persons with disabilites?

The Adaptive Sports Center of Crested Butte and WBO have teamed together to offer a universal curriculum to welcome WSC students of any physical or developmental ability on the 3-day Crested Butte Camping course. This course has the best environment for any student to participate and build new friendships right before classes start!

Can I move into my Residence Hall early?

Yes. Students attending a WBO course get access into their room the day before they depart. This gives you time to safely store your belongings before you leave. All you need to do is stop by the College Union the day before departure between 1:00pm and 4:00pm to get your keys.

Can friends and family attend a WBO course?

No. The courses are open to WSC students only. Your New Student Orientation Session, however, is open to guests.
