What if I'm selected for Verification?
Institutional Verification Form
Everyone selected for verification must complete the verification form.
Tax filers have two options to provide their 2013 federal tax return information to us. Please choose one of the following options to complete your file.
Option #1 – IRS Data Retrieval Tool Process
What is the IRS Date Retrieval Tool?
Using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IDR) is beneficial because it reduces the number of documents that must be submitted to Student Financial Services and ensures the FAFSA is accurately completed. The IDR tool is accessed through the FAFSA. If you and/or your parents meet the IDR eligibility requirements, this option will be available 2 to 4 weeks after federal income taxes are submitted to the IRS electronically. It may take 4 to 6 weeks if they are filed by mail. Transferring IRS data directly from the IRS to the FAFSA through this process will provide the required income confirmation that is required for verification.
What is needed to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool?
- A current year tax return must be processed by the IRS
- Must possess a valid Social Security Number
- Must have a Federal Student Aid PIN
Tax-filers who are not eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool:
- Filing a tax return as "Married Filing Separately"
- Filing a tax return as "Head of Household" when married
- Filing an amended return
- Filing a Puerto Rican or foreign tax return
The IDR tool will determine your eligibility at the beginning of the process. If you are not eligible to complete the IDR then you will be required to submit a tax return transcript. See option #2 for details.
What if I have trouble using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool?
- Review the IRS Data Retrieval Guide for step-by-step instructions
- Request a federal tax return transcript from the IRS
- Contact our office at (970) 943-3085 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Option #2 – Tax Return Transcript
If you cannot use, or choose not to use the IRS Data Retrieval tool, you will need to obtain a Federal Income Tax Return Transcript for 2013 from the IRS and submit it to our office. If you are a dependent student, we will also need a copy of your parent(s) Federal Income Tax Return Transcript(s) (this includes step-parent if your parent is remarried). Please visit the IRS website at www.IRS.gov or contact the Internal Revenue Service at 1-800-908-9946 to request a Federal Income Tax Return Transcript. Please submit the Tax Return Transcript(s) with the Institutional Verification Form. Click here to learn more on how to request a Tax Return Transcript.
What if I haven't filed taxes yet?
If estimated income was reported on the FAFSA, visit fafsa.gov and select submit a correction and then use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool after taxes are filed. This feature will be available to e-filers within 10 business day and 6 to 8 weeks for paper filers.
All students must use the IDR tool or submit a Tax Return Transcript by the first day of classes.
Non-Tax Filers must complete the section titled “Non-filer Information” on the Institutional Verification Form. W-2’s will be required for all income earned.
