Nate Acrey was selected for the November 2 Player of the Week for being selected as part of the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union Select-Side. Nate's selection to the team means that he is the best player in his position in both the Division I and Division II player pools in Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico.
Peter Fini, Hockey
Peter was chosen as the November 9 Player of the Week because of his performance during last weekend’s games against the Colorado School of Mines. Western State lost both games, but Peter’s performance helped Western State manage a 5-8 final score in the last game. Peter was listed on the 4th line, last in the depth-chart, but came off the bench determined and scored two goals and passed for another. The team captain, Bryce Michaels, said the unexpected performance helped rally the team to bring the score closer and finish the weekend with some heart.
Allison Drescher, Rugby
Allison Drescher was selected as the November 16 Player of the Week because of an outstanding individual performance against the Mesa State women’s rugby team. Allison’s physicality, aggression and determination helped the WSC women gain and shift momentum as well as retain possession in a difficult loss to the lady Mavericks.
Chris Lange, Nordic Skiing
Chris Lange was selected as the December 5 Player of the Week for his outstanding out-of-season preparation for the upcoming Nordic Ski season. Coach Duncan Callahan writes, "Chris has done a great job...he is a great athlete, a good student, and an overall good guy; a great player of the week." Chris competed in his first race for the WSC Nordic team at Crested Butte on December 19 and 20.
Brittany Perkins, Nordic Skiing
Brittany Perkins was selected for her outstanding performance in two races over the holiday break. Perkins skied the 15K Classic race and placed third. After, Perkins placed second in the Skate 7.5K race. According to coach Duncan Callahan, Perkins' great start to the season makes her a contender for the USCSA National Title.
Dylan Bryant, Alpine Skiing
Dylan Bryant was selected as the January 25 Player of the Week for his first place finish in the Steamboat Springs USCSA Slalom race. Bryant bested the competition with a gap of two seconds and looks to continue this strong start to the Alpine season in Winter Park at the end of January. Bryant, and the rest of the male Alpine Ski team, are currently ranked 9th in the nation.
Scott Krankkala, Nordic Skiing
Scott Krankkala was selected as the February 1 player of the week for finishing 2nd in the 10K at the WSC Nordic team’s competition in Grand Mesa. Krankkala also finished 1st in the Town Series 20K in the competition prior to Grand Mesa. Krankkala is doing the Grand Traverse at the end of March. Krankkala is also the president of the WSC Adventure Racing team and an active member of WSC Mountain Search and Rescue.
Andy Mrkvicka, Ice Hockey
Andy Mrkvicka was selected as the Club Sports Athlete of the Week for February 8 for his outstanding performance in the goal in Western's series against Fort Lewis. Mrkvicka held the Skyhawks to one goal in Western's first win on Friday night with a final score of 3-1. On Saturday, Mrkvicka managed to hold the Skyhawks to three goals in a game where the Skyhawks were in a powerplay situation for most of the game. Mrkvicka and the rest of the Western State Ice Hockey team will face Colorado School of Mines on February 19.
Alex Else, Rugby
Alex Else of the Western State College Men's Rugby club is April's first player of the week. Else was chosen for captaining the WSC rugby team to their first win of the season over the Denver Highlanders Men's Club. Else's solid performance at fullback kept the Highlanders' kicking options in check and his attacking game lead to a try that took the WSC rugby team to a 21-15 win.
