Leadership Curricula

Leadership Curricula for ALPS and DENALI

Guest speakers will be invited to address various topics of leadership, community involvement, and other interests to students. Topics will be age and school year appropriate. Scholarship funding will be tied to attendance at the workshops. The leadership curricula should be aligned with the servant leadership model:

1. Identification and discussion of servant leadership values
2. Training on the skills of servant leadership including listening, group facilitation, service learning etc
3. Guest speakers who exemplify servant leadership describing themselves and their leadership
4. Experiential activities designed to promote self discovery

Leadership Curricula for CRESTONE and ANDES

Leadership Curricula for Crestone and Andes will be planned by Andes and will include two in depth workshops per semester. Andes students should draw on internal and external presenters when designing the workshops.

Group Projects

Each year of ALPS will complete or participate in one group service project. Age appropriate structure and leadership of the planning process will be provided by the program facilitator. The project planning will be conducted over the course of a limited number of focused meetings.

DENALI: A list of projects is offered each semester for the students to choose from. The students choose via a structured process led by the facilitator. The facilitator works with a leadership team to implement the project. Students are provided deadlines and structure to which they are held accountable by the facilitator.

CRESTONE: A list of group projects is offered each semester for the students to choose from. The students choose via a structured process led by the facilitator. The facilitator works with a leadership team to implement the project.

ANDES: The group project for Andes is to plan and implement the leadership workshops for Crestone.

Service and Campus Involvement Hours

Campus Involvement Hours Examples

1. Campus Leadership Position: Leadership role of any duration in an organization, activity, or program.

2. Campus Activities Participation: Membership in any organization, activity or program that requires sustained participation.

3. Professional or Educational Development: Participation in any co-curricular learning experience, such as workshops, seminars, conferences, training programs, Wilderness Pursuit trips or volunteer experiences generally related to personal or professional development.

4. Special Assistant Program: Working with Resident Assistants (RA’s), Student Government Association, Student Union/Campus Life, Academic Support Center, Disability Services, Multicultural Center and/or Mountaineer Athletic Association in the planning and implementation of programs and activities for WSC students.

5. Service Learning: Participation in volunteer opportunities that are developed around community needs.

6. Intramurals/Club Sport: Participation in an intramural or club sport.

7. Intercollegiate Athletics: Participation in an intercollegiate sport.

Activity Validation (AV)

Students will be required to submit on-line entries into their personal activity validation form via Western On Line (WOL). To enter on-line entries go to http://wol.western.edu. After entering username and password, click on WOL, click on School Services, click on Registration, and click on ALPS.

Program Values

The Committee will seek to explain and explore the values of the ALPS program throughout the four year commitment of the student. These values have been identified as central to the program mission and should underscore all program efforts.
