Music majors or minors who can demonstrate financial need, a high grade point average, and composition ability.

Full-time music major with preference to strings and a secondary preference to keyboards. GPA of 3.0 or better. Must participate in private music lessons and an appropriate large ensemble.

An outstanding student in the Department of Communication and Theatre. Student must be a junior majoring in Communication or Theatre with a 3.0 or better GPA.

Bob Austin, President of Beta Engineering Company in Austin, Texas. Bob is an alumnus of Western State College, who established this endowment fund to honor Dr. Jess Gern, then Chairman of the Arts and Humanities Department, and to show his appreciation to the College.

BLUE ZENITH SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Graduates of Mancos High School who are enrolled full-time at Western. Students must maintain 15 credit hours fall and spring semesters and a GPA of 3.0.

The remaining cost of in-state tuition, fees and books, after the amount of other scholarships the recipient receives in a given year.

Full-time students that have been accepted in the PLRM program. Must demonstrate financial need.

*BORAH, TRACY MEMORIAL WRESTLING SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Student may come from any state/country, must be a very promising and accomplished wrestler, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5, must have completed his freshman year and could be a red-shirted freshman. Not necessarily considered for only financial needs.

Provided by:
Established by Louie Carleo and other friends and former wrestlers of Tracy Borah to provide scholarship assistance to talented Western State College student-wrestlers. This scholarship serves to celebrate the memory of Tracy Borah by supporting the kind of athlete he cared most about.

Amount:
The scholarship shall be for $2,000.

Selected by:
The WSC Head Wrestling Coach, Louie Carleo, and a member of the Borah Family (Candi Borah).

Application:
Due by May 1, must be submitted to the Department of Athletics. Need a letter or recommendation from one of the following: a team mate, previous wrestling coach, assistant WSC wrestling coach, friend, teacher, but not from the WSC head wrestling coach or anyone who is on the selection committee. Also, a 250 word essay of the significance of wrestling to his life.

BORICK, BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Declared majors in Business, Accounting and Economics. Colorado residence and US citizens. Must be a full-time student with a GPA of 3.4 or greater. Must demonstrate academic promise and financial need. Preference given to students actively involved in the department and campus.

BRENNECKE/ELKINS, MAGDALENE SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Junior standing or above at the end of the term in which he/she applies; must plan to teach at either elementary or secondary level; must be fully admitted to the School of Education; must have a 3.0 GPA in education and overall; must have demonstrated personal characteristics which would predict success as a teacher. Financial need will be considered.

Family and friends of Magdalene Elkins, who was a 1920 graduate and life-long friend of Western State College.

CAMPBELL, J.W. MEMORIAL WRESTLING SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Members of the WSC Wrestling team who have a minimum 2.0 GPA. Preference will be given to students with an English major and/or who are writers.

CHAMPION LEADERSHIP & RESPONSIBILITY SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Athletes that are a junior or senior in athletic eligibility standing in their respective sport program(s).  Be at least 21 years of age by the first day of classes in the academic year in which they receive the scholarship. Recipient must be enrolled at Western and in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA, and be a member of a Western State College intercollegiate athletic team. They must be eligible to compete under NCAA and RMAC rules and regulations, and clear a back-ground check conducted by the Office of Student Affairs.

*CHARLESWORTH, WILLIAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
The applicant has applied to and has been accepted for admission to Western State. The applicant has demonstrated a need for financial assistance. The applicant has demonstrated an interest and is active in inter-collegiate athletics. Preference should be given to entering freshmen; however, all classes, freshmen through senior, are eligible. Preference should be given to applicants whose study time is limited by family obligations or the need to earn income. No preference should be given based on the sex of the applicant. Preference should be given to applicants from Delta County, Colorado, or from the Western Slope of Colorado.

Provided by:
Established with the Western State College Foundation to perpetuate the memory of William Charlesworth, a 1954 graduate of Western State College. The express purpose of the fund is to provide financial assistance to student-athletes pursuing majors in mathematics or related natural sciences.

Amount:
$1,400 annually (depending on funds available).

Selected by:
Chaired by the chairman of Mathematics and Computer Information Science and shall include a representative from the Athletic Department appointed by the Athletic Director. A representative from the Natural Sciences Deptartment shall be on the selection committee.

CHERRY, DENVER MEMORIAL ACCOUNTING SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Accounting majors, Jr or Sr status, full-time students with a GPA of 3.0 or greater and demonstrate academic promise.

Family of Denver Cherry.

Award depends on funds available (approximate award $500).

COLEMAN, PAUL JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Colorado residents who are Gunnison High School graduates. Must be full-time WSC student and have maintained a 3.2 GPA or greater as a GHS graduate, or a 3.0 GPA as a WSC student.

Provided by:
Mirta M. Coleman, Julia Cockrill and Hazel Dickey, Ed.D.

Amount:
Award depends on funds available (approximately $750).

Selected by:
Donor Scholarship Committee in cooperation with the Western State Foundation and the Director of Financial Aid.

Application:
Complete and submit The Paul Coleman, Jr. Scholarship application which is available in the Office of Financial Aid and the GHS Guidance Office. A teacher recommendation form and a one page essay will be needed to complete the application.

*COMPUTER SCIENCE, THE FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP IN


Available to:
Students who have successfully completed a minimum of 24 credits at WSC and at least 6 credits of Computer Science that apply toward the major. Must be a declared major in Computer Information Science with an emphasis in Information Science. Must have a GPA of 3.0 or greater in Math and Computer Science courses at WSC that apply toward the major. Must be enrolled for at least 9 credits at WSC during the semester of application. Selection shall be based on GPA, character, financial need and contribution to the Computer Science Program.

A gift from Daniel and Roselyn Schuster.

Amount:
Award depends on funds available (approximate award $600).

Selected by:
Donor Scholarship Committee.

Application:
Complete and return a letter of application addressing their suitability for the award, a letter of recommendation from a member of the Mathematics and Computer Information Science Dept and a current copy of their WSC transcript to the M.C.I.S. Dept.

COPE/CHEVRON SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
English majors at Western State College who have full junior or senior standing and who have completed or are currently completing two full years as a student of a modern language other than English.

Provided by:
Dr. John Cope, Sr., long-time employee of Chevron Corporation and father of John Q. Cope, Associate Professor emeritus of English at Western State College.

Amount:
Award depends on funds available.

Selected by:
Scholarship Selection Committee of the Department of Communication Arts, Languages and Literature.

Application:
Submit a letter of application and a letter of recommendation from a member of the Department of Communication Arts, Languages and Literature to the Scholarship Selection Committee, Department of Communication Arts, Languages and Literature. Deadline is April 1st.

Available to:
Declared majors in Business Administration, Jr or Sr status, full-time students with a GPA of 2.0 - 2.5 preferred. Student needs to be recommended by 1 or more WSC Business division faculty. Preference given to members of Delta Sigma Pi, New York State Residents and Community College graduates.

Provided by:

1 award for $1000.

CRESTED BUTTE MUSIC FESTIVAL SCHOLARSHIP

Majors from any discipline who are participating in WSC music ensembles

THE LT. F. SCOT CRISMON MEMORIAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
A student in each academic department who is full-time, carrying at least 15 semester hours. Must have earned a 3.5 GPA in a minimum of 30 semester hours at Western; must have demonstrated leadership abilities.

Provided by:
Family to perpetuate the memory of Western State College alumnus Lt. F. Scot Crismon, Navy fighter pilot who served aboard the attack carrier USS Hancock during the Vietnam conflict.

Amount:
This prestigious award provides a generous stipend.

Selected by:
The Lt. F. Scot Crismon Memorial Foundation Scholarship Committee.

DAMSON, F. GEORGE MUSIC AWARD


Available to:
Winner of the Damson Music Performance Competition. Contestants must be music majors who are enrolled in at least 12 credit-hours at WSC and who have written recommendation from their private lesson teachers.

Extracurricular involvement (outside basketball) will be considered.

Established to perpetuate the memory of Brian L. Kiefer who was an outstanding example of leadership, academic achievement and athletic ability. To recognize outstanding scholarship, citizenship and athletic ability, and to encourage students to continue their education at Western State College.

$750.00 per semester. Applicants must reapply and show they have maintained the required eligibilty in order to recieve the scholarship for the second semester. The recipient shall have his name inscribed on the Brian L. Keifer plaque displayed in Paul Wright Gymnasium.

The Kelly Long Memorial Scholarship has been established by Mr. and Mrs. Ron Long to accomplish three major purposes. To perpetuate among contemporary young people the memory of Kelly Long, who was an outstanding example of excellence in citizenship and athletics. To reward outstanding scholarship, citizenship and athletic ability among Western State College students. To encourage these outstanding students to continue pursuit of their personal goals and a quality education at Western State College.

Amount:
The dollar amount of the scholarship shall be determined by the WSC Foundation and the Selection Committee, to be distributed over two semesters, one-half awarded at the beginning of each term. Approximately $700 for the academic year.

A bequest in Miss Redding's estate and from gifts from former students, colleagues, and friends. Edwyl Redding was one of Western's most loved music professors. She joined the faculty in 1918 and for the next 42 years she played a significant role in the development of the College. Professor and administrator, Ms. Redding's legacy to Western include two musical compositions, "Alma Mater- Western State College of Colorado" and "Ode To Western," the official hymn of the College.

*ROUSE, ROBERTA M. SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Colorado residents. Must be a full-time student in good academic standing; must be planning a career in elementary education; demonstrated academic performance and financial need. Preference is given to students returning to college to continue their education.

Provided by:
Her children to honor their mother. Roberta Rouse met her husband, Fred, while they were attending Western State College. Following WW II, they returned to Western where Roberta supported her husband as he completed his education and began his career as an educator. After the birth of their last of nine children, Roberta returned to complete her BA and MA degrees in elementary education. Seven of their children also attended Western State College and five of the children became school teachers.

Amount:

RULE-VOUGA, MARGUERITE MEMORIAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
All students who will have obtained sophomore or junior status. Music majors must maintain a GPA of at least 2.5. Music major must participate in performing organization or music activity. Preference shall be given to students with a vocal music emphasis.

*SCHULENBERG, KAREN LEE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP TRUST


Available to:
Graduates of Eau Claire, Wisconsin High School; must be a first-time freshman ranking in the top 40% of high school graduating class or have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Must also achieve a score of at least 870 on the SAT test or 21 on the ACT test; must reside on campus; maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA at Western, and be a full-time student.

Provided by:
A trust established by her family to memorialize this outstanding young woman and to assist other women students graduating from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Memorial High School to attend Western State College. Karen Schulenberg graduated from Western State College in 1975. She died accidentally while on her way home from a class reunion in 1978.

Amount:
One-half of non-resident tuition.

Available to:
Permanent resident of a Colorado County whose Sheriff's Department is a participating member of the County Sheriffs of Colorado. Must be enrolled or applying and accepted into an institution of higher education as a full-time student.

The County Sheriffs of Colorado (CSOC), established in 1978 as an expression of the Sheriffs' confidence in and respect for education and training.

Amount:
$500 per year.

SLOAN, ALVA W. MEMORIAL ACCOUNTING INTERNSHIP


Available to:
Students who have earned at least 60 hours of college credit and majoring in Accounting or Business at Western. Preference given to legal residents of Colorado; who qualify for financial assistance through work-study programs.

Provided by:
His wife, Millie, family and friends, as a tribute to the memory of a man who served Western State College with exceptionally high standards for seventeen years as an Accountant and Controller.

Amount:
Spring term award is approximately $500.

Selected by:
Chair, Business, Accounting & Economics Department, V.P. Business Affairs and Controller through application and personal interviews.

Application:
Submit a letter of academic qualifications, work experience and internship expectations to the Business and Accounting Department by November 15.

Other:
Award provides payment for practical experience in the Western State College Accounting Office. Academic credit can also be earned through the Department of Business and Accounting.

Ten to twenty $1,000.00 awards.

Complete and submit Student Scholar Assistantship Application form available in the academic departments.

Other:
Assistantships are to provide special learning opportunities which supplement usual classroom experiences while developing leadership, management, problem-solving and interpersonal skills. Scholars will also receive academic credit while providing valuable assistance to various campus activities.

VANDENBUSCHE, GEORGE SCHOLARSHIP

Junior or senior student active as a member of the Western men's or women's cross country teams; exhibit outstanding character and leadership in the classroom as well as in the athletic arena.

Family to honor the memory of George Vandenbusche who came to the United States from Belgium in 1920. Beginning in 1965 he was employed at Western State College Maintenance Department for the next eleven years.

Donor Scholarship Committee (Head Cross Country Coach).

Application:
One man and one woman from each of the cross country teams are nominated by the respective coaches to receive the award.

Full-time students at Western State College; must have declared a major in Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

Gifts from members of the Walker family to perpetuate the memory and to commemorate the service and devotion of C. Ralph and Florence Walker who both served the College and the Gunnison community in an exemplary manner for many years. Professor Walker was Chairman of Western's then Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

WATSON, STEPHEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

Students majoring in Mathematics and Computer Information Science, who have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours at Western State College 3 of which can be applied towards their major. The students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and plan on enrolling in at least 9 credits.

WRIGHT, PAUL W. MEMORIAL FUND


Available to:
Western/RMAC scholar athletes. Must have competed at Western State College for two or more years and have at least one year of eligibility remaining.

Provided by:
Paul W. Wright and his wife Hazel who made immeasurable contributions to students of Western. During his 28 years on the staff (1935-1963), "Frosty" Wright coached every men's sport at one time or another and served as athletic director and chairman of the Physical Education Department. He was named to the Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame in 1970 in partial recognition of his role in establishing skiing as an intercollegiate sport recognized by the NCAA. The gymnasium on the Western Campus is named in his honor.

ZUGELDER, ANN AWARD FUND


Available to:
Men and women students at Western State College pursuing certification in elementary education; must be a full-time sophomore or junior at time of selection, or junior or senior at time award is given; must have a 3.5 GPA or higher. Must exhibit high standards of scholarship, leadership and citizenship and above average communicative skills.

Provided by:
Ann Zugelder, one of Gunnison's most distinguished citizens. She was an elementary school teacher for more than 30 years, maintaining her interest and support of elementary education after her retirement in 1967.
