Tips for Completing FAFSA

Helpful tips for completing the FAFSA and minimalizing problems

The application is available online:

The U.S. Department of Education - www.fafsa.ed.gov

  • Western’s Title IV Code is: 001372.

One in three students applying for Federal Financial Aid will be selected for Verification.  This is a process that requires additional documentation to be sent to the school's Financial Aid Office.  If you are selected you will be notified by the school and required to provide the requested information before we can complete your application for aid.  Though there is no way to avoid Verification there are ways to lessen your chances of being selected.

    • Read all instructions.

    • Don't skip questions, omitting information requested will guarantee selection for Verification.
    • Remember to electronically sign and date the FAFSA application before submitting it.  An application will not be considered complete until this is done.

    • If you have questions about the application FAFSA has a 'Help' link on their website, or you can always contact the Financial Aid Office.
    • Report taxes paid, not taxes withheld.

    • If interest or dividends are reported on 1040, principal source must be reported on FAFSA under “Investments”.
