Mastering the Lecture
Before the Lecture:

Take a few minutes to look over the notes from the previous class so you can relate them to the lecture you are about to hear.
During the Lecture:

Record your notes in simple paragraph form.

If you miss an idea, leave a space, and continue with notes. Fill in any missing information after class.

Use abbreviations to give you extra time to listen and write.

Write legibly but quickly; writing complete sentences is not always necessary
After the Lecture:

Review your notes as soon as possible after class. Fill in any spaces purposely left blank, and underline words containing main ideas.

Allow space for a column on the left side of the page. Jot key words and phrases in this column that will serve as cues for the facts and ideas on the right side.

Cover the right side of the sheet, exposing only the jottings in the recall column.

Using the cues in the recall column, recite aloud the facts and ideas as fully as you can. Then uncover the notes and verify what you have said. Review your notes at least once a week.
While studying your notes, try the following:

Identify what you think is important and focus on learning that information well.

Have a way of checking yourself-a way of testing whether you have learned the necessary information. Reviewing with one or two other people in the class may be effective.

Make a conscious effort to think about each item you read in your notes.

Design a test for yourself from your notes.
