Assistant Resident Director

Thank you for your interest in applying to be an Assistant Resident Director for the 2006-2007 academic year and challenging yourself further in an incredibly demanding position. Our goal is that this process will make you think of how you have matured and what you have learned in the previous semesters, and how you will continue to challenge yourself in the future.

As a returning Sr. Staff member, you can provide leadership and direction for your area, and bring a historical perspective, which is essential for the new staff you will work with next year. You should not leave the interviews with unanswered questions or uncertainty regarding Residence Life philosophy and values.

Minimum Qualifications

 

•  Enrolled as a student at Western State College of Colorado .

•  Obtain a 2.75 cumulative grade point average at the time of application. Maintain a 2.75 cumulative GPA and a semester GPA of 2.75 throughout employment.

•  Required one year experience in Residence Life or a related field.

 

Position Requirements

 

•  An average work week of 20-25 hours.

•  Due to the time demands of the position, student teaching is not allowed. The Resident Director must approve internships and any on-campus or off-campus employment.

•  Due to the required time commitment, extra-curricular activities may have to be limited in order to meet the time demands of the position and are subject to the approval of the Resident Director. It is expected that enough time be committed to the position in order to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

•  All weekday and weekend nights away from campus need to be approved by the Resident Director.

•  Abide by all college policies and act as a role model to students on campus.

  

Responsibilities

 

Staff Selection and Training

•  Attend ARD training sessions with the RD of your prospective building during the 2006 spring semester.

•  Arrive on campus approximately 3 weeks before the Fall semester begins to attend training and Fall Semester preparation.

•  Arrive on campus one week before the spring semester to attend and present staff training.

•  Coordinate team building and professional development for individual RA's and staff.

•  Assist in planning and presenting monthly educational all campus in-service staff meetings.

•  Attend other training as deemed necessary by the Resident Director and/or the Department of Residence Life.

 

Hall Operations and Leadership

•  Assist the RD with hall opening.

•  Assist the RD with year-end closing. Remain on campus at least one week after graduation to help complete all paperwork and additional closing responsibilities.

•  Track and report all RA programming to the Residence Director.

•  Advise Hall Council. Attend all meetings and programs. Oversee budget.

•  Develop and distribute RA duty schedules once a semester.

•  Hold 5 office hours per week. This time should be used for completion of projects or meeting with students and staff.

•  Manage the RA Office: Inventory keys, key cards, and room condition contracts at the beginning, middle and end of each semester.

•  Weekly walk through area.

•  Other duties as discussed with RD.

 

Optional Developmental Opportunities

  1. Attend monthly Security Meetings.
  2. Assist RA's and help RA's facilitate roommate mediations (as needed.)
  3. Observe and attend between 2-5 judicial hearings per year (to experience the judicial process).
  4. Attend bi-monthly professional development meetings.
  5. Advise RA Council
  6. Other duties as discussed with the RD.

 

Meetings and Supervision

•  Attend Departmental Meetings (Senior Staff Meeting and Contact Meeting with RD).

•  Attend weekly RA staff meetings. Assist the RD in preparing and facilitating these meetings.

•  Coordinate a bi-monthly meeting with each RA to review their programming expectations.

•  Regularly attend RA and building programs.

•  Other meetings as designated.

 

Remuneration

Assistant Residence Directors will be compensated to cover room and board costs for the 2006-2007 academic year and receive a stipend of $400 per semester.
