Colorado Outdoor Recreation Expedition (CORE)
CORE is an 18-credit semester-long experiential education program. It includes six courses: Interpretation of Natural and Cultural History, Travel Logistics and Group Skills, Advanced Leadership, Outdoor Pursuits Education-Land Based, Leadership and Administration of Outdoor Pursuits, and Wilderness First Responder Certification.
During the CORE semester, the class will travel throughout southwest Colorado and Utah, including Canyonlands, Mesa Verde, Black Canyon, Dinosaur National Monument, and the Moab area. The cost of the program includes all travel, food, camping and park fees, on-campus housing for brief stays in between expeditions, and 18 credits.
Our approach combines rigorous academic content and learning expeditions focused on teaching in an engaging way to inspire character development and self-discovery. Program focus includes: team building, communication, leadership skills, problem-solving and decision-making skills, environmental ethics and interpretation, and wilderness survival skills. Students examine and develop ethical practices and behavior for those utilizing wilderness resources and skills relating to planning, organizing, and executing a backcountry outing.
