The festival began in 2002 as the Gunnison Whitewater Festival. Due to growth in popularity and the creation of the kayaking series in Colorado, the festival has grown to what it is today. The undertaking of the festival rests with the faculty and students at Western State College of Colorado, and the community of the Gunnison Valley.
