Francesca Pavillard-Cain

Spending almost her entire life in ski-towns from Steamboat Springs, CO to Leysin,Switzerland, Francesca Pavillard-Cain knew Western State Colorado University was for her.

“There’s not one person here that fits the mold. That’s the beautiful part of it.”

Francesca spent her early childhood in the Gunnison & Crested Butte area before living briefly in Switzerland. At age 10, she lived in Ecuador and attended a Spanish-speaking school for a year.

After graduating high school in Steamboat Springs, CO in 2009, Francesca was looking for a school to better her education and skiing abilities. She found that opportunity at Western.

Francesca is now double majoring in Business and Spanish, with an emphasis in the Resort Management Program. She is also President of Western's Mountain Sports Team Ski Program.  The team is a competitive program that competes in collegiate skiing and mountain biking.

“Western has allowed me to play big role in the organizational part of skiing, while taking charge of my academics.”

Since joining the team, Francesca has won the following titles:

  • Freeskiing World Tour, Crested Butte, Fifth Place (2010-2011)
  • Freeskiing World Tour, Snowbird UT, North Face Young Gun Award (2011-2012)
  • Freeskiing World Tour, Moonlight MT, Eighth place (2011-2012)

She enjoys the small community feel and personal relationships she has created with fellow students and professors.

“I have to worry about being late to a class that’s across the sidewalk because I see so many friends including instructors, and I really like that.”

Francesca has been taking advantage of the many opportunities available through Western, including spending a semester abroad in fall 2011. She summed up the reason for her adventurous lifestyle with, ““Try different things, surprise yourself, and surprise others.”

She will also be traveling soon to China in May, 2013 and is on track to graduate in 2014.
