Dr. Terry Schliesman

Starting at Western State Colorado University in 1998, Terry Schliesman has served in the Communication Arts program as professor of Communication, General Manager of KWSB 91.1, and even the Chair of the Communication Arts, Languages and Literature Department from 2005-2008. Prior to higher education, he worked in radio broadcasting in the northwest. His research interests have included speech anxiety, media effects, CMC, and strategic communication. More recently, he’s rekindled his interest in digital audio production. In addition to Western, Dr. Schliesman has taught at Washington State University and Oregon Tech, in the topics of writing, speech, advocacy and persuasion, PR and advertising, campaign design, media effects, broadcasting, issues management, audio production, semiotics, communication theory and methodology, conflict management, small group communication, and applied interpersonal communication.
Dr. Schliesman joined the Academic Affairs staff in August, 2013, while retaining a one-class per semester teaching load in Communication Arts. His AVP responsibilities include oversight of the Registrar’s office, Academic Resource Center, First Year Seminar, Supplemental Instruction, Center for Teaching Excellence, as well providing representation on Curriculum Committee, GE Committee, Academic Policies Committee, Crisis Management Committee, SophoMORE Experience Committee, Sustainable Action Committee, and GE Council (Department of Colorado Higher Education).
Terry and Laura have raised three children in Gunnison; Alex (18), Leanne (17) and Greg (14). Away from work, the Schliesmans enjoy boating, camping, hiking, fly-fishing, skiing, and canvassing the Western Slope watching the kids compete in high school / middle school sports. Terry and his hunting dog, Ellie Mae, spend winter breaks chasing pheasant in the fields of eastern Colorado.
