A native of the Pacific Northwest, Professor Newman earned her bachelor's degree in psychology (with a minor in accounting) from Western Washington University. She then spent five years working as a legislative assistant for a Michigan State Senator. After earning a Masters in Taxation degree from Baylor University, she worked in public accounting for two years and became licensed as a CPA in the state of Texas. After getting an opportunity to teach at Baylor University, she earned her Ph.D. in accounting from the The University of Texas at Austin in 1988. She taught at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, before coming to Western State College of Colorado in 1990.

Her specialty area is taxation, but she has taught numerous other courses, including statistics, finance, cost accounting, and the capstone course for accounting seniors. She has been the chair of the Business, Accounting & Economics Department since July 2000.

Professor Newman says, “At Western State I have found a place where I can make a difference. Because of Western's size, I get to know my students over multiple semesters and sometimes over their entire college career. It is very satisfying to watch students grow and develop and feel that I was a part of that process.
