Dr. Maria-Claudia Tomany has served as associate vice president for Academic Affairs at Western since January 2013. Claudia’s responsibilities include graduate studies, extended studies, internationalization, online learning, concurrent enrollment and school partnerships, grants and sponsored programs, assessment and accreditation, and library services.
Claudia is a professor in the Department of Communication Arts, Languages, and Literature. She studied at universities in Norway, Germany, Iceland, and the US. Having pursued double majors in Scandinavian Studies and English both for her master’s and her doctoral degree, her research and teaching interests have focused on the medieval and early modern culture of Northern Europe and its reception in the medieval and Nordic imagination of modern-day Western culture. They include a lively interest in neo-medievalisms such as Renaissance fairs and reenactment culture, video games and MMOG’s, heavy metal, and film.
Prior to coming to Western, Claudia served first as academic program director, then as assistant vice president for undergraduate studies and international education at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and taught at the universities of Frankfurt, Munich, Arizona State University, and Minnesota State University.
