Music Department

Music challenges the mind at the same time it soothes. Western's Music department leads students on a journey to more deeply understand how melody, harmony and rhythm combine, while helping them hone their skills at presenting those combinations to eager ears.

At Western, you'll find an active and engaged musical community. On-campus groups collaborate and perform everything from symphonies and chamber music to jazz and roots music. The Gunnison valley also offers a wealth of musical venues and styles, from hip-hop and rock to bluegrass, country, Americana and classical. Many students and instructors – from all disciplines – play in bands and impromptu gatherings at clubs, in private homes, in parks and in concert halls.
