Most freshmen arrived on campus Wednesday, Aug. 19, bringing with them boxes of clothing, bedding, curtains, televisions, lamps, refrigerators, computers, pens, notebooks, smartphone chargers and all the other accoutrements of college life – as well as some tools and toys particularly suited to the Gunnison Valley and surrounding hills. Skis, snow boards, long boards, bicycles, paddles, climbing gear and even kayaks helped fill the residence halls along with young people stepping onto the next stage of their lives.
“Magic,” says Shelley Read, a senior lecturer in English at Western State Colorado University, who organized a Maymester trip to Prague for Western’s Honors program.
