WSC Celebrates Homecoming Weekend, Sept. 24-26

Sept. 20, 2010 -- This weekend Western State College alumni will travel far and wide for the annual Homecoming celebration. This year’s Homecoming theme is “Super Western!”

On Friday, Sept. 24, the free Homecoming Pre-Victory Party, featuring live music by 3 in the Morning, food and drinks, starts at 7 p.m. at the Aspinall-Wilson Center. The traditional lighting of the “W” will be at 8:30 p.m. followed by fireworks. There also will be a bonfire at the Mountaineer Bowl parking lot at 9 p.m.

Homecoming isn’t the only cause for celebration on Friday evening. At 4 p.m., there will be a dedication ceremony for Kelley Hall earning LEED Gold certification for energy efficiency and sustainable design. The celebration then moves to the Borick Business Building at 6 p.m. where two new bronze sculptures by WSC alumnus Joshua Tobey will be dedicated.

Saturday’s Homecoming festivities kick off with the Meet the Coaches Breakfast at 8 a.m. at the College Center. The cost is $8 per person; contact the Office of Alumni Relations at (970) 943-2493 to register.

At 10 a.m., the Homecoming parade will cruise through downtown Gunnison. WSC Board of Trustees vice chair Sandra Mark will lead as parade marshal.

The Homecoming football game, where the WSC Mountaineers take on the University of Nebraska Kearney, begins at 1 p.m. at the Mountaineer Bowl. Game tickets are $7 for adults and free for WSC students with ID.

Other sporting events on Saturday include the rugby and lacrosse teams competing against alumni at 11 a.m. and noon respectively at the athletic fields south of campus, and WSC volleyball against Mesa State at 7 p.m. in the Paul Wright Gym.

As part of the Homecoming celebration, Western also is promoting the studio tour where local artists open their workspaces to visitors. Tours are held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25 and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26. Information and a tour map are available at www.gunnisonvalleystudiotour.org.
