A New Homecoming Tradition

By Tonya VanHee, Western Alumni Director — The Piquette family, which has graduated 22 Western alumni, will be named this year's Honorary Family during a new Homecoming event.

If Webster's had a definition for Mountaineer Pride, it would reference the Piquette family, with their family portrait as its illustration. The Piquette family members didn't just attend Western State Colorado University: they were actively involved and have made a difference along the way.

It all started in 1929 when Lucile (Falkenberg) Piquette from Westcliffe, Colorado enrolled at Western as a freshman student. She and her husband, Charles, raised six children in Westcliffe, all of whom attended Western and collectively they earned seven degrees. Spouses of the children, grandchildren and their spouses, and one great grandchild and her spouse have attended and earned 15 degrees. In total, 26 immediate family members covering four generations have attended and earned 22 degrees. Twenty-five of those family members still reside in Colorado. Currently, one grandchild is enrolled at Western and will receive the 23rd degree in 2014.

In the year 2000, the “Charles E & Lucile C Piquette Memorial Scholarship” was established by the family, at the Western State Colorado University Foundation, to assist qualified Colorado residents with their educational costs.

There are very few corners of the Western campus that have not been touched in some way by some member of this family. Jerry Piquette (’61), is a retired Vice President for Business Affairs at Western. He currently serves on the Mountaineer Athletic Association Board of Directors. Lacey Piquette (’12), the most recent graduate of the family, was the student graduation speaker at the May 2012 ceremony.

In appreciation of their loyalty, devotion, affinity and love for Western, they are being recognized as this year’s “Legacy Family” at Homecoming 2012.

Western is eternally grateful and forever “Mountaineer proud” to call the Piquette family one of ours.
