Mountain Sports Competes on the Snow

Western's Mountain Sports athletes have been training hard and competing in events on the snow across Colorado this semester.

Western's Mountain Sports athletes have been training hard and competing in events on the snow across Colorado this semester. 

The Endurance Ski Team made a statement in the Colorado randonee race scene last weekend at the Divine Incline hosted by Powderhorn Mountain Resort.  Five Endurance Ski Team members traveled to the Cosmic Series event.   With near perfect bluebird weather and an early morning start, racers could not have asked for a better day to enjoy the slopes of Powderhorn in friendly competition.

The Mountaineers racked up the following results:

  • 2nd Place, Womens Rec.- Heather Bradford
  • 3rd Place, Womens Rec.- Zoe Smith
  • 13th Place, Mens Race- Nick Schley
  • 24th Place, Mens Race- Matt Clark

During the same weekend, Western's Park & Pipe athletes competed in the USASA Snowboard Slopestyle event in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The Mountaineers got on the podium and represented Western well.

USASA Snowboard Slopestyle:

  • 1st Place- Grady Shoop
  • 2nd Place- Andrew Arnold

USASA Ski Slopestyle:

  • 3rd Place- Dominick Pucherelli

USASA Rail Jam

  • 1st place- Miranda Holson

Meanwhile, Western's Nordic athletes raced in Crested Butte and earned two podiums in the 10k skate event.

  • 1st Place, 10k Skate- Chris Lange
  • 3rd Place, 10k Skate- Samantha "Bob" Maddox

Finally, Western's Endurance Team continues to train for area randonee races, including the Grand Traverse. A group of Western students recently skied the west face of Gothic Mountain, climbing and then descending 3,200 feet to Washington Gulch. (Photo above courtesy Nick Schley)
