Community Gives Back to a Couple who have Given so Much: WSC effort recognizes John and Lois Roberts
Dec. 10, 2009 -- The classic holiday question is, “What do you give the person who has everything?” A spin on that question is, “What do you give a couple who has given everything?” Local friends and Western State College of Colorado (WSC) leaders recently asked that question in regards to how to honor John and Lois Roberts for their lifetime of generosity to the college and Gunnison Valley community. Their answer was to name a meeting room in their honor in Western’s new College Center.
Dec. 1, 2009 -- Last winter Laurien Moes thought that she and others should have some shelter while freezing in the cold in Gunnison, waiting for the Gunnison Valley Rural Transportation Authority bus to Crested Butte. This winter, thanks to the efforts from the WSC senior, she won’t have to.
Nov. 23, 2009 -- All five scoring runners for the Western State men's team earned All-America honors as the Mountaineers finished as the national runner-up for the third consecutive season at the NCAA Division II National Cross Country Championships held Nov. 21 at the Southern Indiana cross country course.
Nov. 19, 2009 -- Western State College of Colorado is bolstering its alcohol prevention and awareness efforts thanks to a nearly $244,000 federal grant through the Prevent High Risk Drinking or Violent Behavior Among College Students program.
Newfangled Ranch Hands: WSC students working closely with city in developing plan for Van Tuyl Ranch
Nov. 18. 2009 -- Last spring, Steve Westbay, Gunnison’s director of community development, wanted to reach out to Western State College for assistance in developing a management plan for the city's 460-acre Van Tuyl Ranch, located on the north and western flanks of town, under the afternoon shadow of the Palisades rock formation. So he started knocking on some doors.
Nov. 16, 2009 -- Western State College of Colorado English professor Bill King and his American roots music class will host an evening of folk music from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19 at the Gunnison Arts Center.
Nov. 5, 2009 -- Western State College of Colorado sophomore quarterback Tyler Daniels earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors, selected and presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America. He is the first academic all-district selection for the Mountaineer football program since 1998.
Oct. 29, 2009 -- First-season Western State College of Colorado (WSC) rugby player Nate Acrey was selected to represent the Eastern Rockies (ERRFU) and Rio Grande (RGRFU) Rugby Football Unions at the Local Area Union Tournament in Dallas on Nov. 7.
Director of Environmental Studies, John Hausdoerffer Named Teacher of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce
Oct. 27, 2009 -- The Gunnison Country Chamber of Commerce honored Western State College Professor John Hausdoerffer as the 2009 "People's Choice" Teacher of the Year.
Crash Claims Recent Grad: Lisa Thomas Duits capped stellar WSC career in May, was coaching cross country this fall
Oct. 22, 2009 -- Tragedy struck the Western State College family and the greater Gunnison Valley community last weekend when Lisa Thomas Duits was killed in a one-vehicle car accident on Hwy. 135, a few miles north of Almont. She was 23.
