Native American Student Council
Mission Statement:
The Native American Student Council strives to provide and enhance educational
experiences and opportunities for all WSC students, Faculty, Staff, and
Gunnison community. In addition, we strive to provide a forum for students
to find support, understanding, interest, and awareness of Native American
culture. It is our goal that the Native American Student Council will
have a positive impact on Western State College campus in achieving the
aforementioned objectives.
Fear Factor & Faculty Fear Factor
This staple of NASC based off of the popular TV show is not for the easily nauseated. Though it has very little to do with Native American culture it is nonetheless a fun and exciting event. Each year NASC holds two Fear Factors. One has students competing for a cash prize and the other pits faculty members head-to-head to win the coveted Faculty Fear Factor trophy with their name and department etched into it as well as free donuts delivered to their office for four Fridays. Fresh ideas are always being sought out and if you wish to join NASC and help out with this event your voice will be heard.
Native American Entertainment
It is our goal to bring a Native American entertainer to campus each year. In the past we’ve had authentic tribal dancers, singer/songwriters, and storytellers.
Retreat
A new tradition to NASC. Over President’s Weekend the club sets out for an important Native American ancestral site in the four corners region. In 2006 we went to Chaco Canyon in New Mexico as our first destination.
