Department Scholarships Awarded April 2008
The William E. Dorgan Memorial Math Scholarship was awarded to Courtney McCullough.

Courtney will be a senior next year. She intends to learn enough probability during her senior year to pass the first actuarial exam and begin a career in the insurance industry. |
The scholarship honors William Dorgan, a long time Mathematics professor at Western State College. It was established by Professor Dorgan's daughter, Roberta Dorgan Beckman and her husband Dennis. Professor Dorgan came to Western in 1951, joining the faculty as an Assistant Professor. He taught at Western for thirty years, retiring as a full professor in 1980.
The Scholarships for Mathematical Studies were awarded to Aaron Sheppard, Heather Carlson, Alexandra Tayrien, and Sarah Oeding.

Aaron will graduate in May 2009 with a math major and minors in philosophy and physics. While at Western he has worked in the math center as a tutor, presented twice at Celebrating Scholarship Day, done work with the Colorado Space Grant Consortium, and attended the Pikes Peak Undergraduate Mathematics Conference. Before coming to Gunnison, Aaron was a certified air monitoring specialist, testing for airborne asbestos. |

Alexandra is a triple major in mathematics, computer information science, and economics. She is a member of the cross country team and the track & field team. And she volunteers as the adoption coordinator for the Animal Welfare League. During summer 2007 she participated in the Park City Mathematics Institute. In fall 2007 she did a computer science internship to computerize a standardized test. When she is not in school she works for a construction company. |

Heather is participating in a student exchange to New Zealand this semester and will return to Western in the fall. She is a double major in math and chemistry. She has tutored in the math center. In summer 2007 she worked on a chemistry research project here at Western. She is an EMT and works for the hospital. After graduation she is considering medicine or medical research. |

Sarah is finishing her second year at Western. She is a math major with an emphasis in secondary education. She tutors students from the math center and the high school and finds joy in knowing that she has had a positive impact in students schooling. She also coaches the high school diving team. |
This scholarship is funded by donations each year. The number of awards is dependent on the funds available.
The William Charlesworth Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Jesse Howe.
| no photo available | Jesse will start at Western in fall semester. She is currently finishing high school in Cheyenne, Wyoming. She plans to be a math major with minors in business and Spanish. She also intends to pursue a secondary teaching license. Jesse will compete in track and field while at Western. |
This scholarship was established to perpetuate the memory of William Charlesworth, a 1954 graduate of Western State College. The express purpose of the fund is to provide financial assistance to student-athletes pursuing majors in mathematics or related natural sciences.
