Library Instruction Program
What is Library Instruction?
Library instruction is more than a building tour. It is a program of instruction sessions, designed to fit the needs of individual classes, that promote effective use of the library and other information resources. Instruction sessions give students the skills to locate, use, and evaluate information, the building blocks of information literacy. Sessions can be scheduled either in the library or in the classroom.
Why Library Instruction?
Research is more than just finding books in the library or surfing the Web. The Leslie J. Savage Library offers a variety of databases that not only indicate materials located in the library building but also resources available online and from other libraries around the world. Because most students come to Western with limited knowledge of how to access information from our databases and minimal experience with the research process, library instruction can reduce research frustrations and get students off to a positive start in completing assignments. And, most importantly, students get to meet the librarians that can help them succeed!
