Search the Web - Links to Search Engines & More
Search Engines
Search engines are large databases that index every word or most words on Web pages. Remember: you are not searching the entire Web, just the search engine database fixed in time.
- Google - for searching help, see the Google Cheat Sheet
- Google Scholar - search for "scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports."
- Vivisimo
Meta-Search Engines
These tools search the databases of multiple search engines simultaneously.
General Subject Directories
Directories group Web sites by categories. Some directories also function as search engines.
- Open Directory Project
- Yahoo!
- Virtual Reference Shelf (Library of Congress)
- Internet Public Library
Specialized Subject Directories
These directories include sites selected according to specific criteria. They feature annotations or site reviews.
