Finding Articles

The Finding Articles page provides a list of databases for finding articles in periodicals (magazines, journals, and newspapers.)

Some databases include article citations with abstracts or summaries of the articles. Other databases include full-text articles. And, some databases include both.

Select the Right Database for Your Topic

Academic Search Premier and WilsonWeb cover all topics and include magazine and journal articles. Other databases, like Business Source Premier or Health Source - Consumer Edition, include only articles related to business topics or health issues.

For many topics, the "all purpose" databases, Academic Search Premier and WilsonWeb, are good places to begin.

The EBSCOhost Family of Research Databases

Savage Library subscribes to a number of databases provided by a company named EBSCO. EBSCO is an acronym for the Elton B. Stephens Company. The database portion of the EBSCO company is called EBSCOhost.

When viewing the list of EBSCOhost databases, read the brief descriptions of each database to find the one that's right for your topic. You can search multiple databases simultaneously.

EBSCOhost Searching Tips:

The search screen for each EBSCOhost database looks similar and basic searching is the same for each database.

  • By default, EBSCOhost searches for phrases

    • example: global warming

  • To combine words in your search that are not necessarily a phrase, separate with "and."

    • example: marijuana and legalization

  • Use parentheses to create a search that looks for one word and one of either two or more words (Boolean logic)

    • example: marijuana and (medical or therapeutic)

  • Use a * to search for a root word with different endings

    • example: global warming and environment* (looks for "environment," "environments," "environmental")

Accessing EBSCOhost Databases from Off Campus

EBSCOhost databases are available off campus only to WSC students, faculty, and staff.
