Western Colorado Collection
Helen A. Jensen Room, Leslie J. Savage Library
The Western Colorado Collection includes books, maps, and other materials pertaining primarily to Gunnison and the surrounding area. History, archaeology, wildlife, geology, agriculture, mining, and politics are some of the areas covered by the collection. Materials in the collection date to the mid-1800’s through the present. Recent publications are added to the collection as funding permits.
The Western Colorado Collection was created to:
-
preserve and ensure continuing access to published and unpublished accounts of the history of the geographic area in which Western State College is located
-
enhance the value of the library's collection to scholarship and the college curriculum
All materials are cataloged and can be identified through the library’s online catalog. Materials do not circulate but can be used in the library.
The Western Colorado Collection is housed in the Helen A. Jensen Room, a research center for anyone interested in the history of the area. The Jensen Room is open for browsing and research two evenings each week when classes are in session or by appointment. Contact Nancy Gauss, ngauss@western.edu, 970.943.2278.
Helen A. Jensen Bradford operated cattle and sheep ranches in the area of Meeker, Colorado. While enrolled as a Western Stat College student in the summer of 1976, she regularly used the library and envisioned a special area for the library’s Western Colorado Collection. She subsequently donated funds to help create a research center for Western Colorado materials.
