Students in the field.Welcome to the Western State College of Colorado geology web pages. Western is a great place to study geology! We take advantage of the spectacular geology of the Gunnison country by including field experiences in all our classes. These local experiences are complemented by extended trips to various places in the southwest including northern New Mexico, the Colorado Plateau of Arizona and Utah, and the Basin and Range of eastern Utah and Nevada.

Thanks to generous support of the Paul M. Rady Family Foundation and W. A. "Tex" Moncrief, Jr., Western has an emphasis in Petroleum Geology with well-equipped laboratories and strong collaborations with the petroleum industry. This is one of only four undergraduate petroleum geology programs in the country, and the only one in Colorado.

Students at Western may pursue programs in:

  • General Geology
  • Petroleum Geology
  • Geoarchaeology
  • Earth and Space Sciences (Secondary Education)
