Field Experiences in Geology

The geology program at Western is strongly field oriented and take several departmental field trips a year in addition to the afternoon field trips associated with individual classes. These trips include the Western Slope Geology Field Conference in the fall and a five to ten day field trip in the spring term.

Geology 300 is a field trip course that is used to show students the varied geology of the Rocky Mountains Colorado Plateau, and Basin and Range.

Field trips have gone to:

  • The fold & thrust belt & Tetons in Wyoming - Spring 1994
  • Northern New Mexico - Spring 1996
  • Mojave Desert & Death Valley - Winter 1997
  • Dinosaur National Monument - Spring 1997
  • Central Utah- Spring 1998
  • Northern New Mexico - Spring 1999
  • Capitol Reef & the Henry Mountains in Utah- Spring 2000
  • Northern New Mexico - Spring 2003
  • Northern Arizona and the Grand Canyon - Spring 2004
  • Central and Western Utah - Spring 2005
  • Northern New Mexico - Spring 2006

The Western Slope Geology Field Conference is a weekend field trip in the early fall that is hosted and led by a group of institutions on a rotating basis. The participating institutions are:

  • Adams State College (host 2008).

  • Fort Lewis College (host 2009).

  • Mesa Sate College (host 2006).

  • Western State College (host 2007).
