Scholarships for Out-of-State Freshmen

Incoming freshmen who are residents of states other than Colorado are eligible for the scholarships listed below.

Merit Scholarships

The following are awarded automatically to incoming freshmen who meet the eligibility requirements. Merit scholarships are renewable for four years. All SAT scores are combined Critical Reading and Math scores only.*

NOTE:  Students who qualify for a merit scholarship cannot receive WUE or CP tuition discounts.  Students who do not qualify for a merit scholarship may be eligible for a Tuition Discount Program.

Renewal Requirements for Merit Scholarships 

To continue receiving a Merit Scholarship, students must:

  • Enroll and complete a minimum of 24 credit hours each year.
  • Summit and Scholars Award- Maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA
  • Advantage Award-  Maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA
  • Meet satisfactory academic requirements.
  • A maximum of 8 semesters of eligibility will be awarded to freshman students and 6 semesters of eligibility will be awarded to transfer students.

NOTE:  If you do not maintain the requirements listed above and lose your Merit Scholarship, you are not eligible to receive the WUE or CP tuition discounts.  If you are awarded a Summit or Scholars Award and fail to maintain the required cumulative GPA of 3.0, you will not receive the Advantage Award.

We encourage you to apply for these scholarships in addition to the automatic awards listed above. Eligibility criteria and application information is listed in the description of each scholarship.

Dirksen, Evan James Memorial Scholarship Fund

Eligibility: Full-time students who participate in the Mountain Sports Program (preferably Big Mountain Skiing) and who are majoring in Geology or Music. Preference given to Gunnison High School graduates (Gunnison valley graduates) who demonstrate financial need.

Eastman Award in Recreation and Outdoor Education

Eligibility:  Full-time students at Western who are Juniors or Seniors. Must be a declared major in Exercise and Sport Science. Must have a GPA of 3.0 or greater. Show outstanding achievement in four of the following five areas; Special Talents, Leadership, Obstacles Overcome, Community Service and Unique Endeavors.

Provided by:  The Estate and family of Ernest Degutis.

Amount:  Award depends on funds available.

Selected by:  WSC Exercise and Sport Science faculty in consultation with the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid as needed. Award made at the end of the spring semester each year.

The Foundation Scholars Program

The Western State Colorado University Foundation, a non-profit corporation established to provide private support of Western State Colorado University, announces The Foundation Scholars Program. The funds for this program are donated to the Foundation by Western alumni, friends, and parents.

Pepsi Cola Need-Based Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students with unique or unforeseen situations and have financial need.

Provided by: Commission sales from Pepsi Cola products sold on campus

Amount: Award depends on funds available.

Application: Complete and submit Western's Common Scholarship Application. Narrative must include information explaining unique or unforeseen circumstances.

Piquette, Charles E. and Lucille C. Scholarship

Eligibility: Descendents of Western Alumni, must work part-time, embody the spirit and values of Charles and Lucille Piquette. They encouraged all of their children to receive higher education (especially through Western) and created a family legacy at Western. Preference given to Colorado residents.

The Presidential Honors Scholarship

The Western Presidential Honors Scholarships, established by the Jack and Marilyn MacAllister Foundation shall be an elite class of scholarships awarded to Western’s highest achieving and most deserving students, celebrating the ideals of academic excellence and service to the campus and community.  Recipients of the Scholarships will be members of the Western State Colorado University Honors Program.

There are eight Presidential Honors Scholarships of $2500 each.  Each year two new Presidential Honors Scholarships will be awarded to two incoming freshmen.  Click here for criteria and application.  

Queal, Morgan L. Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students with demonstrated financial need who embody the spirit and values of Morgan L. Queal. Queal served as an attorney for the Navajo Nation and later entered private practice. Per Calvin Queal, "Morgan had a special feeling for the poor, the disadvantaged, the persecuted and abused. She scorned sham and pretension, and firmly believed in the causes of justice and fairness." Preference given to students studying a Liberal Arts field such as history, political science, literature, writing or art.

Richard, James R. Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students who demonstrate both academic promise and financial need.

Thornton Assistance Scholarship

Eligibility: Any student that has a unique or unforeseen situation or considerable financial need.

Provided by: The estate of Jessie Thornton

Amount: Award depends on funds available.

Application: Complete and submit Western's Common Scholarship Application. Narrative should include a detailed description of the unique or unforeseen situation or the considerable financial need. Students should also submit supporting documentation to provide an accurate picture of their financial situation.
