Scholarships for Colorado Resident Freshmen

Incoming freshmen who are residents of Colorado are eligible for the scholarships listed below.

Merit Scholarships

The following are awarded automatically to incoming freshmen who meet the eligibility requirements.  Merit scholarships are renewable for four years. All SAT scores are combined Critical Reading and Math scores only.*

Renewal Requirements for Merit Scholarships 

To continue receiving a Merit Scholarship, students must:

  • Enroll and complete a minimum of 24 credit hours each year.
  • Summit and Scholars Award- Maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA
  • Advantage Award-  Maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA
  • Meet satisfactory academic requirements.
  • A maximum of 8 semesters of eligibility will be awarded to freshman students and 6 semesters of eligibility will be awarded to transfer students.

NOTE:  If a student is awarded a Summit or Scholars Award and failed to maintain the required cumulative GPA of 3.0, they will not receive the Advantage Award.

We encourage you to apply for these scholarships in addition to the automatic awards listed above. Eligibility criteria and application information is listed in the description of each scholarship.

Caplan, Gerald Scholarship

Eligibility: Graduates of small public Colorado high schools (with a three-year graduating class size of 100 graduates or less). Preference given to minority students with financial need.  Preference given to students who are the first in their families to attend college.

Coleman, Paul Jr. Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Colorado residents who are Gunnison High School graduates. Must be full-time Western student and have maintained a 3.2 GPA or greater as a GHS graduate, or a 3.0 GPA as a Western student.

Provided by: Mirta M. Coleman, Julia Cockrill and Hazel Dickey, Ed.D.

Amount: Award depends on funds available.

Application: Complete and submit The Paul Coleman, Jr. Scholarship application which is available in the Office of Financial Aid. A teacher recommendation form and a one page essay will be needed to complete the application.

Cummins, D.H. and Mildred Scholarship Fund

Eligibility: Gunnison High School graduate majoring in business, chemistry or history at Western State Colorado University. Students must be prepared to demonstrate financial need, a positive attitude and academic ability.

Provided by: Dr. D.H. Cummins, Professor of History and Dean of Academic Affairs at Western State Colorado University, in memory of his wife, Mildred, who taught in the Gunnison Public Schools. In addition, contributions to the scholarship have been made by family and friends in memory of both D.H. and Mildred Cummins.

Amount: Award depends on funds available.

Application: Complete and submit Western's Common Scholarship Application. Narrative should demonstrate financial need, positive attitude and academic ability.

Dirksen, Evan James Memorial Scholarship Fund

Eligibility: Full-time students who participate in the Mountain Sports Program (preferably Big Mountain Skiing) and who are majoring in Geology or Music. Preference given to Gunnison High School graduates (Gunnison valley graduates) who demonstrate financial need.

Dolezal, Gary Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Men and women from high school seniors to college seniors. Must have been involved in scouting program and attained rank of First Class Scout; must be a graduate of a Western Slope high school. Gunnison High School graduates who meet the criteria will be given first preference.

Provided by: The family in memory of Gary Dolezal, who was an example of scouting, citizenship and scholarship.

Eastman Award in Recreation and Outdoor Education

Eligibility:  Full-time students at Western who are Juniors or Seniors. Must be a declared major in Exercise and Sport Science. Must have a GPA of 3.0 or greater. Show outstanding achievement in four of the following five areas; Special Talents, Leadership, Obstacles Overcome, Community Service and Unique Endeavors.

Provided by:  The Estate and family of Ernest Degutis.

Amount:  Award depends on funds available.

Selected by:  WSC Exercise and Sport Science faculty in consultation with the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid as needed. Award made at the end of the spring semester each year.

The Foundation Scholars Program

The Western State Colorado University Foundation, a non-profit corporation established to provide private support of Western State Colorado University, announces The Foundation Scholars Program. The funds for this program are donated to the Foundation by Western alumni, friends, and parents.

Glover, Whitney Chantal Scholarship

Eligibility: Incoming freshmen from Gunnison High School who plan to major in Biology, Chemistry, Education and/or Exercise and Sport Science at Western. Students should have a 3.0 GPA minimum, but 2.5 will be considered if there are special circumstances. Preference given to females and to those who have demonstrated an interest in working with children during high school as well as intend to pursue a career working directly with children.

Gunnison Watershed Scholarships

Eligibility: Gunnison High School graduates who attain a high level of academic achievement and who have exhibited strong leadership traits through student government, athletics and other activities.

Provided by: Gunnison Watershed District

Amount: Award depends on funds available.

Application: Complete and submit Western's Common Scholarship Application. Narrative must include information about activities involved in during high school years and high school GPA.

Kent, Lt. General Glenn A. Scholarship

Eligibility: Residents of Otero County, Colorado who have a minimum 2.75 GPA and who demonstrate financial need. Recipients may renew each year with a 2.75 GPA.

Leroux Family Trust Scholarship

Eligibility: Colorado residents with a 3.0 GPA who show financial need.  Preference given to graduates of West Grand High School (Kremmling, CO) followed by graduates of other Western Colorado high schools.

Pepsi Cola Academic Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students who are Colorado residents

Eligibility: Full-time students with unique or unforeseen situations and have financial need.

Piquette, Charles E. and Lucille C. Scholarship

Eligibility: Descendents of Western Alumni, must work part-time, embody the spirit and values of Charles and Lucille Piquette. They encouraged all of their children to receive higher education (especially through Western) and created a family legacy at Western. Preference given to Colorado residents.

The Presidential Honors Scholarship

The Western Presidential Honors Scholarships, established by the Jack and Marilyn MacAllister Foundation shall be an elite class of scholarships awarded to Western’s highest achieving and most deserving students, celebrating the ideals of academic excellence and service to the campus and community.  Recipients of the Scholarships will be members of the Western State Colorado University Honors Program.

There are eight Presidential Honors Scholarships of $2500 each.  Each year two new Presidential Honors Scholarships will be awarded to two incoming freshmen.  Click here for criteria and application.  

Queal, Morgan L. Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students with demonstrated financial need who embody the spirit and values of Morgan L. Queal. Queal served as an attorney for the Navajo Nation and later entered private practice. Per Calvin Queal, "Morgan had a special feeling for the poor, the disadvantaged, the persecuted and abused. She scorned sham and pretension, and firmly believed in the causes of justice and fairness." Preference given to students studying a Liberal Arts field such as history, political science, literature, writing or art.

Reichle, Olivia L. and Fred A. Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students who graduated from a Colorado high school with a minimum of a 3.25 GPA and have resided in Colorado for at least 10 years.

Amount: Five $1,000 scholarships

RE/MAX Community Brokers Scholarship

Eligibility: Gunnison High School or Crested Butte graduates who are full-time, high need and demonstrate a strong desire to continue his/her education and succeed professionally. Recipient must maintain a 2.5 GPA at Western during first session in order to qualify for renewing scholarship.

Richard, James R. Scholarship

Eligibility: Full-time students who demonstrate both academic promise and financial need.

San Juan Mining Scholarship

Eligibility: Incoming freshmen who are graduates of Gunnison High School (current Western students are NOT eligible). Students must enroll full-time at Western State Colorado University.  Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be able to show financial need.

Thornton Assistance Scholarship

Eligibility: Any student that has a unique or unforeseen situation or considerable financial need.

Provided by: The estate of Jessie Thornton

Amount: Award depends on funds available.

Application: Complete and submit Western's Common Scholarship Application. Narrative should include a detailed description of the unique or unforeseen situation or the considerable financial need. Students should also submit supporting documentation to provide an accurate picture of their financial situation.

T.W.C. Scholarship

Eligibility: Colorado residents. Must be a full-time student and have financial need. GPA of 3.0 or higher required for renewal.

Provided by: The T.W.C. Foundation as encouraged by its President Daniel Warner, a 1968 graduate of Western State Colorado University.

Amount: Award depends on availability of funds.
