2014 New Student Orientation Schedule

Please keep in mind that this schedule is tentative and some details may change. please check this webpage again or reference the schedule in your orientation packet once you arrive to campus on August 19.

August 19:

  • Orientation Check-In • 9 am – 4 p. • University Center Patio
    Representatives from IT Services and the Office of Student Affairs will also host tables in the University Center if you have additional questions for those offices.
  • Not sure where to go? Campus tours are scheduled every hour between noon and 2 pm leaving from the University Center Patio.
  • Residence Hall Check-In • 9 am – 5 pm • Assigned Residence Hall
  • Pick up your Mountaineer ID Card • 9 am – 5 pm • University Center 121
    You must have completed the online course Think About It before you can get your card. If you have not completed it, please go to www.campusclarity.com and login with your Western email address. Computers are available in the Leslie J. Savage Library.
  • If you have questions about your class schedule, visit with an Academic Advisor in the Academic Resource Center• Taylor 302
  • ALPS Information Session • 3 pm • University Center Patio North Patio
    This meeting is specifically for new freshmen (and their parents/guardians) who have been selected to participate in the ALPS Program for the 2014-15 academic year.  There will be a program overview outlining expectations and requirements for participation and scholarship renewal along with an opportunity to ask questions.
  • Swing by the Western Bookstore & pick up your Books-To-Go and some Western gear! • University Center

    Meet other students living in your Living/Learning community and learn about living in the residence halls at this meeting. REQUIRED SESSION

August 20:

  • USA Pro Challenge • 11:30 am - noon • Escalante Drive
    Join Western in cheering on world-class riders as they race through campus on their way to Monarch Ski Area, in the heart of the majestic Colorado Rockies! Gunnison is hosting the start of Stage 3, also known as the Queen Stage.

  • Orientation Leader Meeting • 1-2 pm • Various Locations REQUIRED SESSION
    Please meet your Orientation Leader at your assigned location. After the Orientation Welcome, your Orientation Leader gave you a slip of paper with an assigned location. After this meeting, your Orientation Leader will also escort you to your Headwaters 100 class, which is your first academic class of your college career.
  • Headwaters 100 Welcome & Class Meeting  • 2-3 pm • Various Locations REQUIRED SESSION
    Your Orientation Leader will escort you to your assigned classroom after the Orientation Leader Meeting. Your instructor will also tell you more about your assigned service project and where you will meet.
  • Living on Campus with Residence Life • 3-4 pm • Taylor Auditorium REQUIRED SESSION
    Meet the Residence Life staff and learn about community living, what you can expect from Western staff and their expectations of you. Western’s Student Code of Conduct will also be discussed.
  • Alumni & Legacy Reception • 4:30 pm • Crystal Hall 103
    Did one of your parents attend Western? Please join the Office of Alumni Relations to celebrate this special legacy. Light refreshments will be served.

August 21:

  • Group Programming Session #1: REQUIRED SESSION

Students will be assigned to one of four groups and will rotate through four different blocks of programming through New Student Orientation. Your New Student Orientation Schedule will have specific time and room locations for your group/color.

  • Headwaters 100 Service Project: You will meet your Headwaters 100 instructor and work beside them and other new students during a service project in the Gunnison community. Your faculty member will tell you where to meet during your Headwaters 100 Welcome on Wednesday, August 20. Please come prepared by referring to the trip information sheet that you received during Orientation Check-In. You will need water, snack, layers and appropriate footwear. Flip flop style sandals are not appropriate. • Location: If your group is participating in the Gunnison Trails service project, you will meet your instructor at The Pinnacles/Mountaineer Field House Roundabout.
  • Academic Resources: During this workshop, you will learn the ins and outs of being a successful student at Western. Learn time management skills with the Academic Resource Center, explore DegreeWorks (a tool to help you monitor your academic progress toward degree completion), and investigate the Leslie J. Savage Library and discover how it will be an important resource for you. IT Services will also provide you with important computing information and tricks of the trade to help make your life as a student much more efficient. • Location: Library 101
  • Life At Western: During this workshop, you will enjoy the entertaining Orientation Leader skit, which lightheartedly touches on many of the real issues that affect college students today, such as roommate issues, social gatherings, homesickness and a healthy balanced lifestyle. Afterwards, Orientation Leaders and Student Affairs staff will explore these issues with you in more depth and also give you resources, should any of these situations happen to you. Your Orientation Leader will also show you around campus, so you know where to go when you need to be there on August 25. • Location: Taylor Auditorium
  • Wilderness Pursuits/Community Trips: Western wants to introduce you to the many exciting activities that our current Western students love to do when they are at “home” in Gunnison. Now is your time to join other new Western students on the same adventure. Please come prepared by referring to the trip information sheet that you received during Orientation Check-In. You will need water, snack, layers and appropriate footwear. Flip flop style sandals are not appropriate. • Location: University Center North Entrance

    Go explore and play in the new Mountaineer Field House. Activities include: bouldering and climbing, basketball, foam pits, batting cage and much, much more.

    Welcome to Western: what to expect in the heart of the Rockies! President Greg Salsbury will formally address this year’s class.
  • Freshman Advising • 2 pm • Various locations REQUIRED SESSION
    Meet your faculty advisor. This meeting will give you important information about your academic area of interest. Check your class schedule in your New Student Orientation packet for your specific location. You will go to this meeting immediately after President Salsbury's address.
  • Enhanced Programming • 3-5 pm • Various locations RECOMMENDED SESSIONS
    All sessions will be offered at 3 & 4 pm, unless noted. Please Pick two:
    • Sex 101University Center South Ballroom: Don’t worry ... it’s not a boring Safe-Sex-Talk, instead you’ll get a good laugh and leave the room smarter! Definitely worth going to and you’ll catch yourself talking about it months later.
    • Being Broke is No JokeUniversity Center North Conference Room: Learn the nuts and bolts about budgeting your money; it’s never too early to learn this information now that you are embarking on life on your own!
    • HonorsTaylor Hall: This session is required for all new students in the Honors Program. It will be offered at 4 pm only.
    • Finding a Job on CampusUniversity Center North Ballroom: This is suggested session for all new students who are awarded federal or state work-study funding. You will learn about how to find a job on campus and how to make your application stand out about others. Visit Western’s work-study webpage for more information about working on campus at www.western.edu/workstudy.
    • Move more & eat better!Mountaineer Field House: Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Learn how to GET MOVING at Western, the benefits of regular exercise and the invisible dangers of a sedentary lifestyle.
    • Dude-You Really DO Have Time To Explore!University Center 121: Find out why Western students and alumni love Gunnison and don’t want to leave. There is always something to do, but sometimes you just need to know where to look.
    • FreeCycleUte Hall Basement (access from Georgia St.): If you are looking for a thing or two to dress up your room, someone else’s trash could be your treasure! Western’s student-run FreeCycle room will be open this afternoon for taking.

August 23:

  • No programming!!! Have fun exploring the Gunnison Valley.

    Enjoy free ice cream and a cup. Orientation Leaders have a special presentation for you too!

August 24:

  • Brunch • 10 am-1 pm • Rare Air Cafe, University Center
  • University Day with Crested Butte Mountain Resort • 11 am - 4 pm • University Center North Entrance
    Enjoy live music, incredible scenery and new friends at the ski resort that has put this valley on the extreme skiing map. Free lift tickets, Adventure Park tickets and shuttles from Western will be provided. More information about this event will be in your Orientation packet. Shuttles will begin leaving from the University Center at 10:45 am and return from CBMR at 3:15 & 3:45 pm. You may also travel to the resort on your own.

    Get ready for classes to start by having some more S’mores and relaxing by the fire!

Orientation Evaluations

Don’t forget to complete your Orientation evaluation before Sunday’s excursion to Crested Butte Mountain Resort. Anyone New Student Orientation participant who completes the evaluation will be given a freshman t-shirt.
