Aesthetics and Community in Northern Italy
Summer study in Florence, Italy

May 20-June 18, 2014

Join Western professors, Dr.  Don Seastrum (Art) and Dr. Paul Edwards (COM) on a month-long exploration of the rich cultural traditions of northern Italy.  The focus of this course is the impact of artistic and aesthetic choices on the cultures and communities of the region and the greater impact of those choices on Western Civilization. Our group also takes into consideration the current challenge of issues of conceptual and contextual content in the arts and humanities in a society of immediacy, where illusion and reality are not always easy to distinguish one from the other. We investigate how arts initiatives and movements built on the past and, in fact, appropriated from the past.  We consider art for art’s sake versus the utility of the arts, and how the tension between one’s personal relationships to the arts interacts with the political implications of artistic expression.  In addition to our residency in the beautiful and historic city of Florence, the course includes day trips to Milan, Verona, Vicenza, Parma, San Gimignano, and Siena. An optional weekend trip to Venice is also planned.  For more information, contact Don Seastrum at dseastrum@western.edu
