SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTIONS

*AAUW (AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN)

Available to:

Non-traditional students(at least 25 years of age). Must be a full-time student, currently attending WSC and working on first B.A. degree.

Provided by:

Gunnison Branch of AAUW.

Amount:

Four $600.00 scholarships awarded, two each semester.

Selected by:

Donor Scholarship Committee.

Application:

Provide a letter giving biographical information, educational goals and specific financial benefit from receiving the award. Include names and telephone numbers of two Western State College faculty references. Complete and submit the Common Scholarship Application available in the Office of Financial Aid. Awards for both semesters are made following the April 1st deadline.

Residents of Montrose, Delta or Ouray Counties in the State of Colorado.

Available to:

Full-time minority students who are Colorado residents; must be seniors during the 08-09 year and earned a 3.0 GPA in previous academic work.

Boettcher Foundation.

Amount:

Five $3,000 scholarships to be awarded.

Selected by:

Western State College Foundation Scholarship Committee.

Application:

If the scholarship is awarded the student will be required to submit a short annual narrative to the Boettcher Foundation detailing their academic experiences.

*CUMMINS, D. H. AND MILDRED SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Available to:

Gunnison High School graduate planning to major in business, chemistry or history at Western State College. Students must be prepared to demonstrate financial need, a positive attitude and academic ability.

Provided by:

Dr. D.H. Cummins, Professor of History and Dean of Academic Affairs at Western State College, in memory of his wife, Mildred, who taught in the Gunnison Public Schools. In addition, contributions to the scholarship have been made by family and friends in memory of both D.H. and Mildred Cummins.

Available to:

Men and women from high school seniors to college seniors. Must have been involved in scouting program and attained rank of First Class Scout; must be a graduate of a Western Slope high school. Gunnison High School graduates who meet the criteria will be given first preference.

Family to perpetuate the memory of Gary Dolezal, who was an example of scouting, citizenship, and scholarship.

Full-time, Colorado residents who have obtained at least junior status. Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.

Recipient must meet at least two of the following criteria: Active member of a WSC intercollegiate sports team. Must demonstrate outstanding character and leadership qualities. Must have both academic promise and financial need. Be from a small town in Colorado , the Rocky Mt region or elsewhere.

KASTELLIC, JOSEPH, A. SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:

Junior level or above, full-time students who have a major in an Environmental Studies, Geology, Environmental Biology or related fields. Preference given to student's with greater financial need, resident of CO Western Slope who have expressed a career interest in park operations and\or management, or a career in earth sciences. Minimum GPA of 3.0.

Provided by:

Barbara Kastellic and gift from others to honor Joseph, who was the first Superintendent of the Black Canyon National Monument from 1975-1984.

Amount:

Award depends on funds available. (Anticipated award $500.00)

KENNY, BRENDA GAIL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:

Full-time students with a GPA of 3.00 or greater. Have both academic promise and be in need of financial assistance. Preference will be given to applicants who are members of the Costello or Kenny families.

*KJOSNESS, OLAF C. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:

Graduating high school seniors or full-time Western students; must have a cumulative 3.2 GPA. Must be able to demonstrate leadership abilities and high personal character.

Provided by:

Dr. Kjosness, former Dean of Students, who filled the position of "father figure" and mentor to hundreds of Western students, personally subsidizing students from his own finances. The scholarship he established when he retired and a memorial fund established by family and friends have been combined to honor and perpetuate his memory.

LUFTSEBEN-TKD SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:

Full-time students who have obtained at least sophomore status. Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. Students must demonstrate leadership qualities which predict future success in service to his/her college community or country. A student may exhibit these qualities by participating as an officer of the student body, or of a WSC club, or as a captain of a sports team.

MOHAB FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:

Colorado residents who have been accepted for admission with a class status of sophomore or above. Must be full-time for three of the four academic sessions; maintain a 2.75 GPA; demonstrate and verify financial need.

Provided by:

The Mohab Foundation, which is a group of former Western State College students who have continued their friendship after leaving Western in the late 1970's and '80's.

Amount:

O'LEARY, MARGARET WHITE SCHOLARSHIP

Students who have earned 45 credit hours at Western State College with a cumulative GPA of 3.5.

Mrs. O'Leary, Mrs. Hattie Steel and women's clubs in Gunnison and Western Colorado. The fund had its beginnings in 1912 when the College was a Normal School to educate teachers.

ORAHOOD, ERNEST-OTERO J.C. & WESTERN STATE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

Otero Jr. College graduates transferring to Western State. Must be a full-time student and have financial need. Math or Science majors with a 3.0 or higher preferred but not required.

Provided by:

Ernest Orahood who attended Western State College from 1936-1940, on very limited resources. This scholarship is made in appreciation of his experiences at Western and to help other needy students.

*SAPP, DEXTER T. SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Residents of Gunnison County for 12 consecutive months. Financial need will be considered. Applicant must be of good sound moral character.

A bequest by Reva Sapp O'Connor, daughter of the early-day Gunnison attorney and Colorado State Senator who played a prominent part in promoting the establishment in 1901 of the Colorado State Normal School, which was to become Western State College.

Preference may be given to students who have successfully met the additional demands of a job while attending college and who are not receiving other college aid.

Available to:

Undergraduate student who is a resident of Colorado. Must be full-time, and maintain a cumulative 3.8 GPA while attending Western.

Colorado General Assembly.

Amount:

Approximately twenty-five $800.00 scholarships to be awarded.

Colorado residents who exemplify the philosophy of the Westerners In Transition (W.I.T.) program with demonstrated financial need who have obtained at least junior status and a 2.0 GPA.
