student literary conference

Each year, the English faculty encourage students to apply to the National Undergraduate Literature Conference held at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.  English faculty help students revise and edit their critical papers and creative writing pieces before the NULC submissions period ends.  In 2005, Dr. Rodriguez accompanied 10 students to the ONLY nationally-recognized English conference exclusively for undergraduates, where the Western students presented both critical and creative work.  One English/creative writing student, Amanda North-Shea, wrote a short story that was chosen for publication in Metaphor, Weber State University’s literary journal.  Dr. Alicita Rodriguez plans to attend the conference every other year with a group of Western students.  In the past, the Communication Arts, Language & Literature Department has covered the travel and lodging costs of all the accepted students as part of its commitment to provide English majors with a well-rounded education that includes practical, experiential career learning.
