Writing/Scholarship

  • Shakespeare in the Alley, is a radio series exploring the lyrics of Bob Dylan as poet.  This series of one hour shows is available to stations via PRX.org.  Most recently it was aired on WETS in Johnson City, Tennessee.  It previously aired on public radio KBUT in Crested Butte, Colorado and on our college station,  KWSB, which will be airing the show frequently.  Shakespeare in the Alley is not another tribute to the song writer or "history of rock" piece. These shows examine Dylan’s lyrics as poetry while not extracting the lyrics from the music. Or, as Christopher Ricks says in his new book Dylan’s Visions of Sin, without ignoring the "way in which the multimedia art of song differs from the page’s poetry" (36).
