Research Interests and Background
Dr. Miccoli’s forthcoming book, Posthuman Suffering: The Expression of the Technological Embrace is the culmination of nearly a decade of research that began in the field of literary theory and eventually led him to the evolving field of the philosophy of technology. Keenly aware of the points of “interface” between the human and the technological, Dr. Miccoli’s research views the technological as an epistemological – and ultimately ontological – expression of humanity. Being-in-the-world depends upon a self-image reflected by our technological constructions. Humans are, and have always been, through technology. His philosophical specialization is the philosophy of technology and Posthumanism, and covers epistemology, ontology, and metaphysics; especially in relation to the works of Heidegger, Lyotard, and Derrida.
In the field of English, he has taught a wide range of literary periods and genres, including Homer, Medieval British literature, Dante, Shakespeare, James Joyce, Postcolonial literature, and all periods of American Literature. His specialty in English studies is contemporary and postmodern American literature, and literary theory (Heidegger, Lyotard, Derrida, and psychoanalytic theory).
At Western, Dr. Miccoli worked with Dr. John Hausdoerffer and Dr. Terry Schliesman to develop the Philosophy minor. He is also currently assisting English majors with the graduate school application process.
