Music Scholarships

The following scholarships are available to students majoring or minoring in Music and students who participate in band or choral groups.

 



ALUMNI MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND


Available to:
Both resident and non-resident students. Must have applied and been accepted by Western and the Music program. Must be a full-time student majoring in one of the areas of music offered by the Western State College Department of Art and Music.

ANNIN, LEORA (COOPER) MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Music majors at Western State College. Applicant must be a full-time student, a junior or senior and recommended by one or more Western music faculty. Award is based on musical ability, academic achievement, leadership, and involvement in college and community affairs.

Family and friends to perpetuate the memory of Leora Annin, who was a life-long friend of Western State College.

Full-time music major with preference to strings and a secondary preference to keyboards. GPA of 3.0 or better. Must participate in private music lessons and an appropriate large ensemble.

DAMSON, F. GEORGE MUSIC AWARD


Available to:
Winner of the Damson Music Performance Competition. Contestants must be music majors who are enrolled in at least 12 credit-hours at WSC and who have written recommendation from their private lesson teachers.

de KOEVEND, MABEL MEMORIAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and proven musical skills and promise as observed by WSC Music faculty. Full-time students must have completed at least 2 semesters at WSC and must participate in musical organizations associated with their major performance medium. Preference given to Music majors. However, student with exceptional music ability will be considered. Preference given to band students. However, vocal and string musicians will be considered. Preference given to Colorado Residents, non-residents may also be considered.

Full-time students with a declared or a plan to declare a Music major. Must have a 3.0 GPA or better and proven music abilities, skills, and promise as observed by WSC Music faculty. Must participate in musical organizations associated with their major performance medium. Preference shall be given to students with financial need.

JOHNSON, BRUCE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Colorado residents who have been accepted for admittance to Western or a full-time Western student; a minimum 2.5 high school GPA. Must be enrolled in band at Western while receiving the scholarship.

Provided by:
Family and friends of Bruce who died suddenly during his freshman year. Since Bruce was unable to fulfill his dreams, the family wishes to help other students achieve their goals.

Amount:
$2,000 for one academic year.

Music majors, must be enrolled full-time, obtained a 3.0 cumulative GPA and be an active participant in the Department of Art and Music activities and organizations.

Shirley Killian, a graduate of Western State College (B.A. in Education, 1940) and her late husband, David who earned both his B.A. (Music Education, 1939) and M.A. (Education, 1946) degrees from Western State College.

Wayne Milheim, a long time friend and philanthropist to the Western State College Music Department, who received his B.M. degree from the Chicago Conservancy of Music in 1950 and his M.A. from Western State College in 1966.

PORTER, MARJORIE MEMORIAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

Her husband, other family members and friends to perpetuate her memory. Marjorie Porter, a graduate of Western State College, was involved in the College and Gunnison community for more than fifty years. A talented musician, writer, and artist, she maintained a life-long interest in vocal music performance.

REDDING, EDWYL MEMORIAL PIANO AND ORGAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND


Available to:
Western State College students pursuing instruction in piano or organ.

Provided by:
A bequest in Miss Redding's estate and from gifts from former students, colleagues, and friends. Edwyl Redding was one of Western's most loved music professors. She joined the faculty in 1918 and for the next 42 years she played a significant role in the development of the College. Professor and administrator, Ms. Redding's legacy to Western include two musical compositions, "Alma Mater- Western State College of Colorado" and "Ode To Western," the official hymn of the College.
